In this chapter, Ben Ratliff speaks on linking as an element where the outcome of a musical piece isn't restricted by constraints and instead has many possibilities on how a song may end up sounding. In my opinion I think he refers to music not sounding formulaic so that your creativity takes your music to where ever it wants to. I agree with Ratliff on that this is important because that its what essentially differentiates artists within a genre. But he also speaks on starting with an idea or sound and then letting the song continue to grow and expand throughout the song into something that was created by itself. It's similar to letting a song flow on its own whether it be to a certain feeling or something similar.

"It is instead, he said, "the element of stability, generator of form" By Ben Ratliff/ Edgard Varesed

In this quote Edgard was referring to the rhythm of songs and how it's not the same thing as metrics. This quote helps understand how linking takes rhythm and uses it as a generator of form to let a song grow into something more complex.

"As for musical form, Varerse wrote, it is not a structure to be backed into; it is better understood as a result of a process" By Edgard Varesed

This quote helped me understand how a song containing the element of linking isn't first started with the end result. Instead, there is only a start and through a process creates a product that may or may not have been thought about at the beginning of the process.

In Tomorrow sunny, Ratliff explains how linking is evident within this song. He does this by pointing out the motion of the instruments saying that they seem coordinated but not with each other. he says it's difficult to predict what's going to happen next because of how the instruments play relative to each other. They have no real formula they follow to produce a specific sound. Instead they do their own thing leaving you to wonder what will happen next. It shows linking because the song continues to build on itself flowing into different sounds.

The song I chose isn't necessarily focused on the music, but the "flow" on how this artist raps. His flow or the way he says his lyrics tends to move in a way that keeps switching and building having a common theme through out. I say this contains the element of linking because his flow starts out one way and then keeps on switching into different yet similar sounds. You think you might know how his flow will continue but then he abruptly changes it to something else.
