By: Margaret Atwood
Samantha Puett
Freshman
English/Secondary Education Major

Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale depicts a world that portrays an extreme oppression of women. The story has been condemned for its critique of Christian fundamentalism. This, along with descriptions of violence and abuse, is why the book was first deemed inappropriate in Rancho Cotati High School, California in 1990. The book, published in 1985, has been banned in several other high schools over the years for it's controversial ideas. What many people view as controversial, I see as necessary. I chose The Handmaid's Tale not because it condones violence and oppression, but because it cautions readers of its possibility. In a society that is still uncomfortable with the word 'feminist', it is crucial that schools familiarize young people with the reality of resenting equality.
