Romanticism vs. Transcendentalism

Romanticism is all about loving nature. It is a very strong sense for the beauty of this world especially in nature. Everybody involved in Romanticism is searching for the ideal world where they can be communion with nature. Transcendentalism is more about achieving higher levels of thinking and understanding. Transcendentalism rejects rigid religious structure. It is more about a man's individual path rather than him receiving divine from God.

The Market Revolution

The Market Revolution was when people stopped producing items for themselves and started producing goods for sale to others. This sparked the Transcendentalism movement because it was the beginning of the modern commercial industrial economy. New technology was being invented at the time. As all of this was going on people started to think that they didn't need the church telling them what to do. The transcendentalists were trying to redefine freedom in a changing world. They argued that freedom resided in an individuals power to remake oneself, and maybe even the world.

What Thoreau is exaggerating is that they like to hear about the news around the globe. They like to hear about and talk about what has happened since they have been asleep. His point is that they didn't have newspapers or Tv so the only way they would know is if they heard about it so they were always trying to get news around the globe. "After a nights sleep the news is as indispensable as the breakfast." (Thoreau,209).

Thoreau seems to believe solitude strengthens a persons mind, "What sort of space is that which separates a man from his fellows and makes him solitary? I have found that no exertion of the legs can bring two minds much
nearer to one another. . . ." .He also sees the world is isolated from the other planets in the milky way, and it seems to be fine on its own so why not strengthen his self instead of having distractions like people. He wants have a deeper understanding of his self. Thoreau finds his answers in nature, it helps his "two minds" become one.
