The U.N. World Food Programme helps communities build resilience to climate change through long-term solutions including:

Reforestation and land rehabilitation projects

Climate insurance for small-scale farmers

Providing local institutions with access to sustainable energy solutions

To tackle the challenges of climate change, food availability and food access, we must also help farmers grow a more diverse range of crops and livestock. That’s why the U.N. World Food Programme teaches farmers new techniques, equips them with tools and educates their communities about the nutritional importance of eating a wide range of foods.

In many poor families, the first preference for food is given to the children and men. Women get lesser or no food for their subsistence. Studies have shown how proper food supplies to women help in the overall health of the family. Yet, women get a raw deal of food even as they are the ones who work in the fields the most. The best way to feed the hungry is to give women their fair share of food.

Across Africa, countries do not have the physical infrastructure needed to get food to the hands of the poor. Roads and railways aren’t of the best quality here. Food distributed by governments, too, does not reach the poor due to corruption and red tape.

“Zero Hunger” is about creating a world free of hunger by 2030. Since 2015, there has been an alarming increase in global hunger and food insecurity, exacerbated by pandemics, conflict, climate change and deepening inequality.

The world is back to hunger levels not seen since 2005, and food prices still higher in more countries than the period of 2015~2019. As conflict, climate shocks and rising costs of living, citizen insecurity and declining food production have all led to food shortages and high food prices.

There are some solutions that we can do to decrease the number of hungry people. For example, cut the food waste, reducing waste in your household is simple: freeze anything you can’t eat while it’s fresh.

Eat what’s in season, as well as supporting your local economy, you might get to know local producers and get tips on how to prepare seasonal foods.

To create a world free of hunger, we can make changes in our own life—at home, at work and in the community—by supporting local farmers or markets and making sustainable food choices, supporting good nutrition for all, and fighting food waste.
We can also use our power as a consumer and voter, demanding businesses and governments make the choices and changes that will make Zero Hunger a reality.
