The setting of the book is Long island and this is proven in the story when they say "We played basketball and football for Long island high school". The setting of this story is important because there is still some racial problems.

There is multiple conflict in the story. But the main ones are the boys struggling financially but want to succeed in basketball. They wanted new shoes for basketball and they needed to pay for school but unfortunately they get caught up in the system trying to accomplish these things.
CONFLICT
Another conflict is the fact that Marcus is black and Eddie is white. They both face racial stereotypes. For example "The newspapers said that things got tense on the court, and there was a lot of racial shit".

Antagonist

The antagonist is not a person. The antagonist is person vs nature/society. The system and being poor is what I believe to be the antagonist. My evidence is from when Marcus tells about what his mom does to get money. "The only money coming in is from her sewing jobs".

Theme

The theme of the book is know matter what you go through or who you are you can always prevail if you push yourself to do it. The reason I believe this is because Eddie and Marcus are both in similar positions in life with their financial levels and the trouble they run into. But at the end they almost put there life fully back together and even through everything they keep their head high. But at the end of the day you the only person to be loyal to yourself.

Something important I heard in the book was when Marcus was explaining his surroundings "Lots of kids we knew either hustled drugs for their loot". This shows the environment they live in and gives you some background knowledge on things they might say. For example Loot and Hustle.

But the people they had around them always knew there was something more to them. My evidence to support both these statements are "It got more hype because we played ball" and "My mother had it figured out about rose and me from the beginning"

Study College Athletes Worth Six Figures Live Below Federal Poverty Line

In college sports there is a lot of money involved but how much of it goes to the players who put their blood, sweat and tears into the game ? Reports found that the room and board provisions in a full scholarship leave 85 percent of players living on campus and 86 percent of players living off campus living below the poverty line. Great athletes receive much less than they are worth, Big time college sports are about business. The mythology of the ‘student-athlete’ as promoted by the NCAA is revealed to cover up a system of not treating people equally in compensation and treatment for the athletes who make the most sacrifices and contribute the most to the enterprise. For example, in the book, Marcus and Eddie killed someone and took his money because they didn't have enough money for new shoes for basketball and to pay for college bills. When they do this it sets them back.
