In previous projects I have made clay sculptures but always rushed the making stage and used air dry clay and acrylic paints. While these methods can yield fun results especially with the colour intensity of acrylics detail is harder and unstable forms are nearly impossible to make without cracking and crumbling. Knowing next year I wanted to try scaling up my work and experiment with mould making and glazing, especially metallics, I started making earlier than usual, as soon as we had a clear direction and understanding of what we wanted to present at the end of the unit.

After the last collaborative project I reflected on what I wanted out of my work and what made me feel good when making and using an Ipad to draw didn't align at all with any of the principles I care about or believe in so I have been trying to focus on new methods and materials, I've not touched an Ipad since, which in turn has improved the end results as I have been making more and understanding things like scale and how things look displayed vs on a screen.
These are a really quick first try but I love how the lines come out warbling and textured when you paint with water and then dropping the ink in, similarly to how I've used watercolours but with much more colour intensity and less bleed.

Because I hadn't glazed before I was worried about the colour intensity and brightness I could achieve. Specifically the more natural tones of glaze not meshing with Zoe's neon green and pink when we put all the work together in one space. The zine centres around corner shops and products that are often specific to said culture, for example import foods that feel as if they are being treated as a fun novelty. 
This is reflected in this romanticising and ill toned manifesto of sorts: 
"A love letter to my favourite corner shops, stale pick n mix sweets, instant noodles, bored dogs, sickly sweet smelling incense, misspelt signs, 5 day old samosas, fresh garlic flat bread, gold foil labels and £3.50 minimum card spend."

With the nature of the project (which is run by two middle class white women setting a project to explore an area which is predominantly a working class POC community) I wanted to tread carefully as our idea is somewhat similar to this zine in that it focusses around found items from local shops, many of these shops focussing on international produce and import items, which we would be remaking and profiting off without giving anything back.
This meant we were more intentional about which shops we took from and tried to question any bias we might have when we thought something was funny or interesting. 

We discussed this outside of collecting and then intentionally didn't speak on it again as we didn't want to become lost in this debate and loose the spontenaity of working.

We debated this being a political comment on the nature of the objects (mass produced) and their value but I am honestly not a fan of most interactive work, especially in the context of this kind of family friendly event and audience as it often feels amateurish and crafty. 
We also decided the comment of remaking impermanant consumer goods as artisan handmade objects intended to be long lasting objects was more interesting as a subtle context.
This idea has always fascinated me and I have often tried to achieve finishes that are reminstant of artificial materials traditionally associated with mass production.

The contextless images and white background is also really affective and I love how it focusses your attention on the textures and forms of each food item.

We had already discussed using found objects or rubbish from the Peckham area to print on and I had been wanting to experiment with inks on fabric for a while. This contrast stood out to me while collecting, I think its interesting to remove both from their context and recreate them equally.
We didn't draw on site as this felt really inappropriate to do in a shop especially without buying things when we are benefitting of their service. 
We were also followed around in many of the shops we visited as people were understandable sceptical of two people wondering around in circles taking pictures of everything.

We were looking at a bag of crisps when discussing names and Grab Bag instantly jumped out. It felt like the perfect descriptor for what we knew would be a display and end result made up of a variety of our methods and mediums, which in turn was made up of different objects we had collected from a range of shops.

The contrast in impact of the scale and theme is fun.
I love the effect she achieves with her glazing, the mix of shiny mother of purple like sheens and natural toned dripping layered glazes creates depth I think was missing from my ceramics during this project and is something I would have ideally spent more time experimenting with if time had allowed.  I feel I have only touched the surface of the potential of glaze but I now understand the principles of glazing and how they work.

Most of them had been made on procreate and made by people who had clearly not had to think about resolution and canvas sizes for printing before, and even in this tiny size the quality was shockingly low. This meant that most of the poster options would have had to be redrawn and we needed it complete the same day for digital publication to post. 
Most of the posters were missing a lot of the essential information for a poster such as location time or even the event name. 
This made me realise Zoe and I had assumed people had the same kind of experience as us and we probably needed to have spend more time going over layout and essential info with the group before. I do feel though that coming in and telling our peers how to do something would not have gone down well and I had already explained what kind of colours would come out best etc for printing, to me if you are volenteering for a poster design group I would expect people to do some very basic research into what is needed and works best.

Because this and the chicken were made in ceramics club I had to use Stoneware Buff clay which comes out a darker colour than Stoneware White which is the clay I bought myself in the downstairs studio. 
I also hadn't had too much time to reflect on my drawings and what I really wanted all the sculptures to look like as I was just trying to get on with making.
This approach worked quite well in the sense that making these two first pieces that are quite opposing in look made me aware that I would have to be more conscious of creating a cohesive series of pieces if they were to be displayed together.

I warped one side too much pulling so I made it wavy.
I debated using the bowl in the exhibition, thinking if we had time we could screen print or draw badges or stickers but this proved too much work so the bowl didn't feel like it would fit in cohesively.

The texture of the ink on the backside is my new favourite thing, especially when I  drew back into it with more solid lines.
This excitement is what carried me through the project, the imperfect and messy material lent itself well to further work and transferring it to other materials later in the project. 
Seeing how the shapes became changed by the ink bleed and how I could recreate these textural qualities in other forms. 
I wasn't overly focussed on forms as I knew I would have to adapt any drawings to suit clay making anyway, so these were just intended to be part of the process but I ended liking them and Zoe did use them for the final prints in the end, but not making with that intention was more fun.

I intended to include Zoes drawings but as I didn't have those on hand I did a first draft with only my own but later took out some of the overlapping imagery between their poster and mine as I felt it would be repetitive to display something with the same drawings and included some of their lovely ones which hadn't had a place before.

This was important to me, as they are some of the principles I have always been drawn to and my most recent previous work had similarly been focussed on humour or sillinness but was also enately political so I wanted to consciously move away from that.
This stance solidified with the research workshop as our position became to really focus on the characteristics of objects and trinkets when the context you view them from changes, for example we weren't shopping for toys or house products we were actively engaging with objects as things with artistic value. 
This context felt like the essential part, something I find silly or funny isn't necessarily what someone else would notice, so it became important to show the objects in the way I viewed them as valuable and humorous, reflected in my making methods which took care and attention and took many hours to come to life in contrast to the making process of the original.

  1. Feelings: I like the research direction I’ve done a fair bit of work around similar themes without necessarily connecting them to folklore and fables so doing this within the context of storytelling in a more literal sense and focussed around references that have been missing will be exciting. Haven’t done much research, just looked back on my favourite childlhood stories and german folklore, but knew all of this already.
  2. Evaluation: Finding it hard to find relevent material, concerned there are only these few stories I already know of and ill run out of material. Think I need to look at more academic analysis of objects and characters in ancient tradition, eg why do we have the idea of helper house elves or mirrors that are magic.
  3. Analysis: Its so early on I’m not sure what my position is, all I know is I’m saying I find it interesting, I think it links to basic human instincts to connect and understand the world, why things happen, what to do and how we feel, but I’m also just trying to making silly things and not think about serious stuff too much. 
  4. Conclusion: Research gaps, finding drawing references other than these couple of books I’ve started with. I can’t answer what Im happy with or not because I haven’t done any of the real work yet, but I like the direction and the connections between fables, literature and making silly scultures that tell the stories through less traditional illustration methods.
  5. Action plan: Research, find sources make lists of all the character things, descriptions of characteristics etc and of objects, what they do and their purpose in the stories and find the current angle. Maybe I can come up with versions that are relevant to modern life like my own objects and creatures.

I looked back at some of the colours I had planned for the ceramics and the colours in Zoes pillows, taking from these so there would be a balance of all the colours. I really liked this contrasting combination of colours and importantly I knew they would come out well with riso or even digital print.

I had intended to ink as it was something I'd been wanting to try for a while and felt it would be a really good moment for us to come back together in terms of making as we had both been focussed on our individual parts for the last couple of weeks.
I struggled with communication here as Zoe decided they wanted to do all the inking and I wasn't as direct as I could have been that I wanted to experiment with this, but importantly they understood what I was trying to achieve and executed it, adding the brightness that was needed for us to display something that tied to the ceramics!

This did mean I lost the most experimental method I had been planning so I had to pivot, putting more energy into making different work with the inks based off all our previous drawings. I really enjoyed working with someone I'm fairly close with as we worked organically and didn't have to build a repertoire.  It was so refreshing and freeing because there was always someone to bounce things off and we could question each others intentions and keep reflecting and improving based on each others feedback.
I think having feedback really improved the work I produced, there have been more projects than not in the last two years where I've gotten to the hand in and am absolutely terrified of feedback and that I haven't done enough work because not a single person has actually seen the work or offered a comment. 
To me this is the whole point of being at art school otherwise I might as well not be spending thousands of pounds and I could continue working at home and the lack of regular crits has been a huge let down during my UAL experience. 
This process therefore pushed me in new ways and also meant I was aware of how much work I was producing.
I think I can continue to improve my communication skills as struggling with this did mean I missed out on doing something that was important to me that would have forwarded my practice, but then again working harmoniously with Zoe felt much more important, especially when working towards an event or deadline where you are expected to present work. 
I did also improve on the previous experience by standing my ground in areas I felt were really important such as which space in Peckham Levels we would be in, as I insisted in being in 450 where there was the most footfall and where I would have the option of selling work alongside others.

I think this became a balanced piece with a good mix of negative and positive space and I think it gives just enough away to communicate with an audience that it is made up of elements of found objects. I decided to give digital printing on the studio printer a go after speaking to Marius about which kinds of paper I could safely use that would be better quality than printer paper and how the print might come out if I was using paper that wasn't as smooth as printer paper.
This was really helpful as he explained I could push to as far as 300gsm paper and that the rougher the grain the more uneven or speckled the print would be because of the laser which to me sounded like an interesting way of making the print a bit more organic!
I ended up printing on 210gsm on a middle ground cartridge paper and it came out nice enough to sell with just a little texture that made it loose some of that digital cleanliness but I do wish I had had time to do some experimenting with printing again or even to find another dot printer as I really love the affect this has especially when you have a goof variety in shading or ink bleeds on the original. ]]> 2023-05-19 13:01:59 UTC https://padlet.com/ldire0520211/dbxbi5kdaar2sa8j/wish/2597589931 Alfie Kungu ldire0520211 https://padlet.com/ldire0520211/dbxbi5kdaar2sa8j/wish/2597625172 I went to Alfies PV for work he was doing with North Face and was really taken with the energy of his work and how messy and striking the end results were, even when the end result was being used professionally.
We got chatting and I asked him about how he got these layered colour washes on his big scale pieces as this felt like a really interesting direction I could go in having always used watercolours but not being satisfied with the vibrancy of colours as I prefer more artificial colours and textures.  He gave me some tips on how to get started and what inks to buy. 
Something that really stuck with me and has been the topic of countless seminars and workshops but has still been hard to grasp was that he told me he had done 50 paintings that day. This level of creative momentum and focus on experimentation was really inspiring, so I've really tried to approach work in this project similarly. In the last couple of days when most of the big work was done we had time to think about the details of how we could display the work. This was helped by Zoe having printed loads of their designs on tissue paper which they sewed into a kind of table cloth and us having thought about wanting labels and price tag type things to further communicate the title name and the fact that all the things we had made were a collection of objects and items from local shops.

The blue bunny and glue bottle fella didn't hold the glaze at all so it came out rough and without the glossy shine I was after, while the orange and yellow took it on perfectly which made for a couple of really clean and polished pieces, more suited for selling. 
I wanted to understand why this might happen so I watched some youtube videos explaining how glazes work and asked James the ceramics tech to go over some tips so I can improve on my next pieces.

Essentially the pores of the clay expand when fired as they have no moisture left in them, and the underglaze or glaze is absorbed into these pores so that it remains in place during firing. Some colours were thicker than others so the thinner the underglaze the better the glaze could hold on to the outside and vise versa. 
I had no experience of this and was very focussed on getting as consistent and bright colours through many layers of underglaze so after the first round of firing I adjusted what I was doing a little and tried some different options.

This ranged from leaving the piece in the glaze for longer than recommended which actually worked, double dipping the piece in the glaze which worked best and leaving it in the glaze for only a few seconds more than usual which did basically nothing.
This was useful information but frustrating as I didn't have time to remake these pieces, which I would have liked as I was aware I was presenting pieces at Peckham Levels that weren't very professionally made.

This felt fairly futile for me as I don't really engage with the posting machine and am pretty aposed to the role it now places in being an artist. 
I instead wanted to use the event as an opportunity to put myself out there in a tangible and personal way. This was one of the reasons I chose to sell all my work, Zoe was unsure about selling anything and took some convincing I think in part because they already use social media to advertise themselves as an artist and to profit of their work, however I don't so this would have been a missed opportunity for me.
I also spoke to Tilly who works for one of the big art markets in London about getting in touch with organisers there for future events as these markets are really well suited to ceramics. We debating only using the distribution team however we felt this approach would be more efficient for covering more ground so the reps spread this to each team. 
We also handing out posters and smaller versions that Geoff had printed as flyers to a few bigger groups of students who were in the studio that day.
The issue with this method was that people didn't feel responsible for spreading the information and had maybe not considered where the best places to post were. 
This was a real shame as Zoe and I had gone over what date we needed the posters done by and distributed by with the rest of the design team when we still thought we would be responsible for distribution. 
I have also done poster pasting for music events many times over the years so I went over what to use to best stick up posters. I also brought up having two distribution dates, one around two weeks before the event and one about a week or five days before as posters usually get covered up or ripped down.

Because it was probably the most complicated thing to work out we spent a lot of the meeting discussing how the general store would work.
The rec meetings proved more efficient than the forums as people genuinely investing in finding the most professional way of putting this on were involved and the smaller group made communication smoother.
There were already so many voices to contend with  in the design team I felt it more productive to channel my energy into problem solving. 
Without sounding arrogant I've worked full time for years and sometimes the gap in logic and communication is clear between people that haven't had to operate in professional environments.  I therefore found myself naturally drawn to a problem solving and communication role, as in previous projects. 
We decided to change the layout discussed by Curation in the last forum, making the General Store a smaller stall where profits wouldn't be divided back to buyers from one general payment system as this seemed way too convoluted and impractical and would instead go into one fundraising pot. The 450 space previously designated for the general store then became a room to either sell in independently or as a space to display in.  
These are skills I'm invested in honing for future work and especially thinking about next year and the potential to put on group shows outside of uni in the coming months.

They brought this idea to me and I was super excited by it as I'd been planning on focussing more on ceramics and have in the past made work that focussed around objects in the home. This felt like a good opportunity to do some positive collaboration with someone who's work I respect and who I felt I could bounce ideas of and work with in an organic way and use as an opportunity to build on some of the things I took away from the previous collaboration project. 
I know that this project put people off collaborating again however the bad experience of making work I wasn't at all proud of and struggling throughout the process just made me want to do it again and have a positive experience, especially as I plan on doing as much collaboration outside of uni as possible, to me collaboration is an often essential part of illustration practices, especially within professional environments where you are often responding to others ideas or work.
