         <title>Houston Elected - October 1836</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After being elected for president of Texas in 1836, it had come to a realization of the many issues Texas faced. Some issues include the deep debt Texas was in and still having to face raids from Western Texas. At this time, they continued to hold Mexican leader, Santa Anna, in prison.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Lamar Elected - December 1838</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After being vice president to Sam Houston, Lamar was elected as president of Texas with much different goals than Houston. He wanted Texas to be seen as a powerful nation, so he was opposed to annexation by the U.S, he wanted to end threats made by Mexico and Native American groups. By 1839, Texas was seen as a nation by France and later on by Britain and the Netherlands.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Texas sets aside land for schools - January 1839</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Another of President Lamar's motives was to set aside land to build schools and provide education. The government set aside 18,000 acres of public land in each county to later build schools on. They also built what is now the oldest university in Texas, Baylor University, which was founded in 1845.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Lamar sends Navy to Mexico - January 1840</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lamar wanted Mexico to see Texas as independent, so he created a strong Navy Force. Along the way, Lamar had ordered the Navy to aid Mexican rebels in Mexico's Yucatan province. He hoped that in return of this, Mexico would finally see Texas as independent.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Council House Fight - March 1840</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1840, the Comanche wanted to make a peace treaty after their raid settlements, Texans would only agree if they promised to bring back all of their white captives. When they brought back only one captive, Texas forces were holding Comanche negotiators hostage while returning the rest of the captives. The Council House Fight broke out, which resulted in the Comanche becoming very upset and aggressive with Texans for killing 35 Comanche.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Santa Fe Expedition - June 1841</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lamar saw that New Mexico was the first step in the expansion to the Pacific Ocean. Even though not approved by congress, Lamar went through with the long brutal journey ahead. Eventually, they were stopped by Mexican troops and sent to prison. Prisoners were released in April 1842.</div>]]></description>

Out of worry of Austin becoming under attack, Houston ordered the archives to move there. This caused the residents to fire, but the Texas Rangers did not fire back. This led to the capital and archives remaining in Austin. </div>]]></description>

Then, the U.S offered Texas to join their territory and agreed to pay off the $12 million worth of debt Texas was in. In return, Texas would have to give up its claims to its public land.
