3. Martin Luther

In my opinion the third most important person in history is Martin Luther. For over a thousand years, the Catholic Church ruled over Europe no one dared to challenge its power. Even kings were overruled by the pope's authority. However, Martin Luther was the first to call out the Catholic Church and he made an insane impact that affected the globe between 1500-1900. Martin Luther was a monk and found issues within the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was corrupt due to its participation in simony and indulgences. Essentially, they encouraged people to pay their way into the church as well as paying to get rid of sin. Martin Luther wrote the 95 Theses, stating the problems within the church, and nailed it to a church door. This immediately shook, Europe. Criticism was unleashed, rejecting the pope's authority and launched the Protestant Reformation, creating multiple new versions of Christianity. Lutheranism, named after Martin Luther, of course, had a primary belief that you don't need to attend mass to have a good relationship with God, staying at home and reading the Bible is just as effective. Calvinism was also created, believing that your destiny is predetermined by God before you were born. Anglicanism or the Church of England was created as a way for King Henry to be able to divorce his wives, without approval from the Pope. The Catholic Church noticed how many followers it was losing, so they sent Jesuits, who were educated missionaries, across the globe in an attempt to gain more followers. This is where we see Christianity spread to the Western Hemisphere for the first time. Furthermore, this guy started an entire war! The 30 Years War between Catholics and Protestants ended with the Treaty of Westphalia, where it was decided that the state will decided its official religion. By just nailing a sheet of paper on a church door, Martin Luther caused an insane amount of reformation in Europe and a change of religion in the Western world.

2. Mary Wollstonecraft

For my number two ranking, I chose Mary Wollstonecraft, who is also known as the mother of feminism. As new ideas were being brought out due to the Enlightenment, Mary Wollstonecraft took the opportunity to advocate for women's rights. She was one of the first to stand up against the societal norms of women having no opportunity. She believed in equality for both men and women ( derived from Locke's natural rights theory) and that women should have access to an education. She further pushed these ideas by writing them down in her book " A Vindication of the Rights of Woman". This book challenged the patriarchal society in Europe and set the stage for the women's suffrage movement a century later.

1. Adolf Hitler

The most significant person in history has to be Adolf Hitler. He has made such an impact on our world, that anyone, no matter how educated, immediately recognizes him and his symbol of death, the swastika. After WWI, Germany was faced with a tremendous amount of restrictions placed on them, due to the fact that they were thought to blame for the war. Germany was forced to demilitarize and pay billions of dollars in reparations. Possibly the only positive impact Hitler had on Germany, was that he restored a sense of national pride within the country and reinstituted the German military. However, he only achieved this by blaming other groups of people (Jewish, homosexuals, disabled) for their downfall, and replaced nationalism with fascism, which was a version of nationalism so intense, that they believed they should be the only ethnicity alive (white with blonde hair and blue eyes). Along with creating fascism in Germany, Hitler also replaced the rank of president with himself as dictator and used totalitarian tactics to repress basic freedoms and dominate the daily life of German citizens and the Jewish in Europe. Gender roles were reinforced. It was more difficult for women to obtain a higher education and women lost the right to their reproductive rights. Political propaganda was also created, depicting the perfect German family and throwing hatred to Americans. Hitler created an immense amount of resentment across the Western world. The Nuremberg Laws were created to limit the rights of Jewish people across Europe. They had curfews, lost the right to vote, lost their citizenship and so much more. If any Jewish person did not obey these laws, they were executed. What he is most infamously known for, is for the inhumane acts and murder of 6 million Jewish people. The constant torture, starvation, horrible condition and experimentation of the targeted group, goes down in history as the first and most cruel genocides. More genocides followed, across the world, including the Rwandan genocide and Armenian genocide. Hitler created something so disgusting, that it still shocks the world today and must forever be remembered, so that history doesn't repeat itself.

1. The Enlightenment

The most important event in history has to be the Enlightenment. So many new ideas formed, causing revolutions across the globe and changing societal norms. The Enlightenment finally caused the shift from succumbing to tradition, to using the brain to ask questions about the real world. The Enlightenment diverted more attention to curiosity, opposed to religion. On the political and economic side, ideas like "laissez-faire", developed by Adam Smith, stating that the government should have less say in economic decisions and that businesses could be privately owned. This was one of the ideas that sparked the French Revolution, which resulted in overthrowing the French Monarchy and replacing it with a constitutional government. The social contract, created by Rousseau, inspired many resolutions, by stating that the general public should give up some of its rights in exchange for law and order. Montesquieu's "The Spirit of Laws" theory, was in favor of the use of checks on the power of the Parliament. This greatly influenced the American system of executive, legislative and judicial branches, that came about after the American Revolution. However, the most significant theory that developed, was John Locke's natural right's theory. He stated that it is the responsibility of citizens to revolt against an unjust government, and that they had the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of property. This idea served as the base for Thomas Jefferson's' Declaration of Independence, which stated that man had the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Feminism and abolitionism also derived from the natural right's theory, but applied to the advocation for women's rights and the end of slavery. Mary Wollstonecraft stated that all men AND women were created equal. Toussaint l'Overture fought for the end of slavery in the Haitian Revolution against France, causing Haiti to become the first black-led country in the Western Hemisphere. The success of the Haitian Revolution inspired slave revolts all across the Americas, causing the Creole Revolutions, led by Simon Bolivar who wrote the Jamaica Letter. This caused the majority of Latin American nations to gain independence and eventually led to the downfall of slavery. Ideas such as capitalism, classical, liberalism, empiricism, conservatism and nationalism also developed. Nationalism, developed intense loyalty to others who share the same language and culture. This is what caused the unification of Germany and Italy and also inspired revolutions for independence in the years to come. Considering how much I wrote about this topic, I'm sure you can see how much of an impact Enlightenment deals had on the world and how it shapes our society today. :)

3. Globalization

Following all the chaos from the World Wars and Cold War, we finally were able to see our world grow immensely regarding modernization. Technology such as the radio. cellular and internet, were created, connecting people from thousand of miles away. Public airplanes and shipping containers, facilitated faster travel and exchange of commerce. Medical innovations such as birth control, vaccines and antibiotics improved the quality of life as well as life expectancy. Populations grew immensely. To support the growing population, technology to support mass agricultural growth developed during the Green Revolution. Farmers used fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation to increase the number of crops/meat products produced. However, with all this rapid development of technology, environmental consequences soon followed. Due to all the land needed for farming, deforestation and desertification followed, destroying the natural habitat for many animals, resulting in the endangerment and extinction of many species. Green house gasses caused air pollution and the fresh water supply is struggling to support the rapidly growing population. Regardless of how destructive that is to the climate/ environment, developing countries have it the worst. Workers in these poorer countries are massively exploited by large multinational corporations, such as Nestle, Microsoft/Apple and Coca Cola. Furthermore, they are massively affected by the poor living conditions. Diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Ebola and HIV are still a massive problem, with no found cure. Due to globalization, environmental problems and exploitation are still a massive issue, with ongoing protest attempting to save our planet.

2. World War II

As well as all the global devastation World War 2 caused, it led to countless developments and significant events in history, that changed the shape of the world. While conducting the war, intense forms of nationalism, or fascism tore Europe apart. Political propaganda, in forms of art and media, threw hatred towards the opposing side, making it more difficult to reestablish peace. Posters depicting enemy countries as monsters, while praising their own nation, were placed all across towns. Firebombing and the atomic bomb was developed, mobilizing entire populations, causing the death rate to increase more dramatically than any other war. So much new military technology was developed, that eventually, nuclear power was used in Hiroshima & Nagasaki, Japan, to finally mark an ending point to the war. Following the war, America and Russia rose to the top as superpowers, competing against each other to have more influence on other nations. Russia became communist, conquering eastern Europe to further the spread. America, being massively democratic/ capitalist, took every measure possible to contain communism. Alliances were incredibly significant because nations could either pick between the two superpowers, or remain neutral. Because of how advanced Russia and America emerged from WW2, technology such as the hydrogen bomb, satellites, space rockets and even being able to put a man on the moon developed. The massive influence the U.S and USSR had on the world, quickly led to the Cold War and the decolonization of colonial territory.
