This song has a continuous pulsing chord of notes, that doesn't stop the whole song. I think because it is pulsing, it is less straining to hear, but still just as interesting. It meshes well with the other noises in the song.

There is a jarring note that comes in the break between singing, that breaks up the smooth harmonious sounds that were going on prior. When I first heard it I thought it was a mistake in the audio, and when it persisted I was shocked that such a strange note was added, and on the offbeat off all things.

At what point while listening to music, do we start to believe it's all just noise? When I heard the song by The Coasters, it made me wonder what purpose the note had. It was jarring, it didn't fit, and it seemed like the noise was added just because the musician could add it. But it does make you aware that you are listening to a song that someone composed and they consciously made the decision to put a noise that doesn't exactly fit. To me, the single note is a reminder that the composers still hold the power. We cannot wish that note out of existence. It is there, whether we want it there or not. Our music collection may be our choice, but the composers still hold the power over what we hear and how the sound emerges.

"The stubborn note, for the listener, is its own phenomenon. When you listen to a single note sounded repeatedly and temporarily holding court, you are listening to ... a form of resistance or play ... but not the language of dutifully developing and then circling back to sum up." Pg. 70.
