Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the universe, especially the nature of celestial bodies, instead of studying their position or motion in space. Among the objects studied are the Sun, other stars, galaxies, extrasolar planets, the interstellar environment and cosmic background radiation. Their emissions are examined through all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and among the properties examined are light, density, temperature and chemical composition. Because astrophysics is a very broad topic, astrophysicists usually apply many disciplines of physics, such as mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and atomic and molecular physics.
