This episode of Star Trek presents the troubles that the Enterprise crew faces when they try to have a diplomatic meeting with Children of Tama, despite neither understanding each other. However, as Jean-Luc Picard puts it, "communication is a matter of patience [and] imagination" and those "are qualities that [his crew has] in sufficient measure" (1:25-1:32). Their patience and imagination is exactly what allows them to somewhat decipher the way of speaking of the Children of Tama and head towards a future friendly relationship with them.

As Picard is sent to El-Adrel IV with the captain of the Tamarian ship captain Dathon, he faces many misunderstandings as Dathon continues to repeat phrases that make no apparent sense to Picard. However, as the episode progresses, Picard realizes that the Tamarians speak in metaphors, or as Ian Bogost suggests in his article "Shaka, When the Walls Fell," "allegory might have been a better term for explaining Tamarian" because "while metaphor represents one subject as similar to another object, allegory replaces one with another entirely."

After gaining some understanding behind the Tamarians' form of speaking, Picard is able to somewhat communicate with Dathon and his crew by also making allegories and creating images for them that they are familiar with or might comprehend.
