Abel Meeropol created the song 'Strange Fruit' but it was most famously sang and recorded in April 20, 1939 by Billie Holiday. Abel wrote this song as a protest poem exposing African American racism but mostly about the lynching about African Americans. Most lynchings happened in the South mostly, but there were still some in other parts of the United States. The lyrics were basically comparing the African Americans to fruit "Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees". The lyrics also described the fear in African Americans as blood was on the leaves and the root of the tree as they hunger there, and the fear in people's eyes. Strange Fruit was rated "Song of the Century" by Time Magazine. I think the first time people heard it they were in shock and didn't know what to think but as they heard it more and more they message really became clear to them about lynching. This song was controversial and they intended this song towards white adult men. This song fit in with the antislavery movement going on at the time but also it was a political movement.

Strange Fruit was written during the Antislavery Movement. What the song says about this time is that people were crying in fear of if they were going to be next, and just were so scared because of their race. People were crying because there loved ones were being killed and it was just a horrible and gruesome time. This song is also talking about racism from before Martin Luther King's speech and Rosa Parks. This song helps us understand history by knowing all the horrible beating and killings that were being done to innocent African Americans.
