The concept of gender based segregation is heteronormative by nature. We divide genders because we may not be comfortable being vulnerable near the opposite sex. This is because heterosexuals view the opposite sex in a different way they view members of their own sex. However, homosexuals view members of their own sex the same way heterosexuals view members of the opposite sex. Therefore, gender segregation is rendered pointless in certain scenarios, because it was established under the assumption that the vast majority of occupants would be heterosexual. Gender segregation is commonly seen in prisons, restrooms, schools, and public baths. I'm not saying that this is a problem or that something needs to change, by the way.

Sometimes I have heard of the opposite happening or both the parents go to work, so they have a babysitter to take care of the child. So teachers and parents were extra worried that we would fall in love and neglect our studies, so school rules were created that prohibited relationships.
