Through the characters of Kathy in Never Let Me Go, the monster in Frankenstein, and Tess in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, one can see that the complexity of life stems from the difficulty in asserting one's free will and self-identity while also accepting the circumstances one cannot control or change. Simultaneously experiencing the struggling and suffering of characters trying to make sense of their lives allows a reader to develop a greater sense of empathy for other human beings.

She knew what their whispers were about, grew sick at heart, and felt that she could come to church no more" (67).

2. Tess felt the pulse of hopeful life still warm within her; she might be happy in some nook which had no memories. To escape the past and all that appertained thereto was to annihilate it, and to do that she would have to get away" (79).

3. "Tess's heart ached. There was no concealing from herself the fact that she loved Angel Clare...Tess's honest nature had fought against this, but too feebly, and the natural result had followed" (116).

4. He was very kind...after Father's death...He has won me back to him" (306).

6. "It is as it should be..This happiness could not have lasted. It was too much...I am ready" (320).
