He ascended the throne in the early 9th century, around 802 AD, and is credited with unifying the various small kingdoms in the region to establish the Khmer Empire, with its capital at Angkor. Jayavarman II is also known for declaring himself "devaraja" (god-king), a significant religious and political move that shaped the empire's culture and governance.</p>]]></description>
