Steve has been an employee for 3 years and has avoided any additional tasks and responsibilities until recently. John has accepted Steve for who he is and understands that Steve still has an important role within the organization. However, Steve is in the out-group. Steve wants in the in-group but needs help. Steve has a long road ahead but certainly an obtainable goal.

"Considerable research has shown that high-quality LMX relationships are related to citizenship behaviors (e.g., Hackett, Farh, Song, & Lapierre, 2003; Podsakoff et al., 2000) and that LMX predicts citizenship behaviors as strongly as it predicts task performance (Ilies et al., 2007). These extra-role behaviors are voluntary, intentional, and positive."
