I think this book study and our discussions, especially today, have reminded me to take the time to find the joy in being curious! I had a teacher come in for specific help, we were presented with an obstacle that prevented me from supporting her with that specific thing, however we were able to address a few other things AND we just wandered around my room looking at all the CS materials available to her - we talked about using them with students but also shared some anecdotes from when we were in school. I got to know her better (and vice versa, I hope!) and learned a few things. Priceless ✨

I also was reminded that sometimes learners just need an extra minute to process and will get themselves back on track. I don't always have to go into solution mode right away.

A couple of times I used the question when I felt myself getting frustrated. It helped give me a little processing space to take a breath. I've really been trying to work on my mindfulness practice this year, and the question is a nice strategy to use outside of school as well.

How many times can you ask yourself “What can I learn today? "
Yesterday I would say that number was between 10-12. I usually apply this strategy to specific situations, so anytime I encounter a novel situation/issue where I have to be curious to find the solution I try to be a bit more deliberate.

What are the things that I learned from my challenges today, by taking a learner stance, rather than trying to control the situation?
I learned some new troubleshooting techniques, as I had encountered an issue that I couldn't solve with my normal procedure. I also learned more about the struggles facing a specific teacher by taking learning stance when discussing upcoming plans/projects. As many others have mentioned we often become "fixers", so I think it's important to look at how you're approaching a situation - Does the situation call for a quick fix to get the class/lesson back on track? Or should the time be taken to step back and analyze the full picture to make sure we're heading the right direction? Either way I think the reflection piece is integral to the learning process.

How might this affect your daily life?
This strategy will definitely continue to help me grow individually and as a professional. When I was a teacher it was super easy to get into a rhythm and take each day one at a time without reflecting too much on how things are going, much less find the time to stop treading water and reall dig into the choices we make. With this career change I of course had to step back and be very deliberate in learning and trying new things, so I feel very fortunate that our team values the reflective process and gives us opportunities to have these discussions.

Post your count here.

So, I didn't ever actually count how many times I asked "what can I learn today?" But, I am making sure to notice how often I attempt to learn something new - even if I am just googling something! I find that throughout the day, I am asking myself what is the best way to do something and looking to others for ideas and support!

What are the things that I learned from my challenges today, by taking a learner stance, rather than trying to control the situation?

This is hard to do! I want to be the fixer when teachers come to me. But, I have to remember that I am learning everyday, too! When someone asks me for an idea or a resource, I feel like an absolute failure when I can't come up with one right away. What if, instead, I said "let's talk some more and figure out one together?" or "what have you used in the past?" Then I can show that I am eager to learn from them as well! My best ideas come from what teachers are already doing!

How might this affect your daily life?

Professionally, it might help with the pressure that I put on myself as I go through the day. Knowing that I am still a learner and that it is okay to show that, will help me! Individually, I have to remember that learning happens everyday, in all areas of life. It is okay to question and find new ways to learn - to take risks - and let others see that risk taking.

Change is constant. (I know it's a trope, but it's a trope because it's true).

I've been thinking a lot about change, even before reading this chapter. So much of my life has changed drastically in the past four years--- many great changes and some heartbreaking changes. Some changes I initiated other changes that were thrust upon me.

If only the word equanimity were easier to say and spell, I'd use it a lot more. It's a good descriptor to my approach to change. I am hyper aware that my reactions can determine how others will react and as a result, I TRY to take a breath and stop before reacting. There are a handful of people that I will allow myself to fully react with to "feel the feels," but in general I like to reflect fully before sharing my thoughts/feelings about changes.

In many ways, the changing nature of education is why I've stayed so long. I can't tell you what will happen next year, next month, heck, even next week, but I do know it will be interesting.

Change is constant, part of life, scary, exciting, shared, individual, etc., etc. Change reminds me that I am at the same time my own individual person and a member of multiple communities. Octavia Butler is a great source of inspiration for me when thinking about change. She used science fiction to reflect on history, society, the future, and the human experience.
2. I would like have more courage and openness when approaching change. Camille's comment about how resisting change is connected to control and fear really resonated with me. I would also like to work on being more centered and grounded in my core values throughout change: What really matters? Where do I want to put my energy?

But, I do know that is not always reality. Change can be hard and that is okay. It is from things are hard or challenging that often help us grow. I wrote down, during our time today, that the secret to change is to deal with emotions (from the chapter). That is the crux - change can elicit high emotions and it is knowing how to deal with or embrace those emotions.

I feel like I have a good relationship with change. My life has had many changes and I try to look on the positive side when they happen.

I think teachers are afraid of changing things because they are afraid of failure. Fear of failure is a big part of school culture that we need to get rid of. This is my favorite video I show students and teachers: https://youtu.be/rDjrOaoHz9s

Change is an inevitable part of life, and often necessary for growth and progress.

It's more than just a physical or external process. It can also refer to internal shifts in perspective, beliefs, and attitudes, which can have a profound impact on our lives and relationships. While change can be challenging and uncomfortable at times, it can also lead to new opportunities and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
I would love to approach change with a mindset of curiosity and openness, and focus on the potential benefits that it can bring.

Change can be a lot of things for me. Change can be intimidating or scary, but a lot of the time change can be fun, or an opportunity.

How do I feel about change? There are definitely some changes in my life that make things incredibly difficult, or are hard to accept, but most of the time changes are exciting for me. I always try to see change as an opportunity, sometimes just for a new experience, other times as a chance to grow. Sometimes change is needed in my life to keep myself pushing forward - it's really easy to get content and stagnate so if I really reflect and decide that change is needed I don't hesitate to take action. The longer I wait to make a change the harder it is and the more excuses I come up with! With change that is forced upon me, I try to step back and analyze what exactly is happening before I make a decision to pivot or persevere. If it's something I have the power to influence, and I feel it's just to do so, I'll do what I can. If it's something inevitable I try to focus on what's most important/critical and work from there. It really depends on the context, and that's what makes it so difficult and interesting at the same time.

Always scary for me. I like to have things in order and chaos makes me really nervous. LOL.

To me, change is growing and learning something new. Whether it is a new concept at work (Standards Based Grading), or personal change with your living arrangements or family, hopefully the change is positive.

Change can be difficult and challenging, but it can also be exciting and full of many new opportunities. I sometimes find it hard to accept change, because I like to be in control of many situations and plan ahead. I have a hard time living in the moment without thinking and planning for the future.

I would like to feel more open to change and put my energy and focus into the new opportunities that change can bring. I think this is something I have been working towards for a long time and have learned to embrace change with a positive mindset. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason even if we don't always understand that reason.
