Chopsticks are used by billions of people around the world—and they have a truly ancient past. The Chinese have been wielding them since at least 1200 B.C., and by A.D. 500 the slender batons had swept the Asian continent from Vietnam to Japan. From their humble beginnings as cooking utensils to paper-wrapped bamboo sets at the sushi counter, there’s more to chopsticks than meets the eye.

A silkworm cocoon dropped into her cup, and as it unraveled in the hot water, she noticed how soft and shiny the thread was. Fascinated, she figured out how to spin it into fabric. For centuries, China kept the process a secret, making silk one of the most valuable and mysterious materials in the world. It eventually traveled west along the Silk Road, becoming a symbol of luxury and connecting cultures across continents.

Porcelain was first created in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty, with the process being perfected in the Song Dynasty . It’s made from a special white clay called kaolin and fired at very high temperatures. For centuries, the Chinese kept the secret of its creation, and porcelain became highly valued. It wasn’t until the 16th century that Europe encountered porcelain through trade, and by the 18th century, Germany's Meissen factory figured out how to make it. Today, porcelain is still seen as a symbol of luxury and fine craftsmanship.
