The EU is constantly evolving. What was originally an economic project, is now a political union including common foreign policy and justice policy. It started with a few Western European countries, but has now evolved into 28 member countries across Europe.

The first EU foundation stone was laid in 1952, when France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg created the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) - which meant joint management of the most important inputs for the armaments industry.

In 2016 divisions were strongly reinforced during the campaign for Brexit referendum; two-thirds of the party's MPs - mainly center-right moderate wing of the party - were in favor of remaining in the EU; third, the Conservative sovereignist hard-liners and the neo-conservative faction, would leave the EU. But grassroots Conservative activists are all further to the right than their MPs.
Since the resignation of David Cameron, the party has moved to the right as pro-Brexit and sovereignist MPs have taken up important positions in Mrs. May cabinet.
