Margaret Sanger was a Progressive activist who reform birth control laws in the United States. Sanger proved to be potentially the most influential character in the movement. She founded the American Birth Control League, opened the first Birth Control clinic in Brooklyn, released several publications on contraceptives, and even faced jail time in order to reform birth control laws in the country. Sanger successfully worked to make changes that led to the eventual legalization of contraceptives.

Emma Goldman was a Progressive activist who also fought for birth control reform. Her aims were to work towards the ultimate goal of women freedom. Goldman gave the first public demonstration of contraceptives and was arrested for her outspoken advocacy in opposition of the Comstock Act (law that defined contraceptives to be illicit). She focused deeply on the idea of achieving sexual freedom for women, which she strongly advocated for.

Mary Dennett was a women's rights activist during the Progressive Era. She formed the National Birth Control League in 1915. Sanger was Dennett's biggest rival, as their ways of going about their reforms differed. Dennett used campaigning in hopes to persuade lawmakers to reform their laws. Sanger's great public appeal soon caused Mary Dennett to resign, along with the National Birth Control League to be dissolved by 1919.

Importance of Birth Control Reforms

Prior to the Comstock Act in 1873, many Americans were opposed to the idea of birth control. Abortions were a very large issue in the country at the time; around 250,000 per year. Contraceptives were extremely necessary for those living in poverty, for they could not afford to raise many children. The working class saw the brunt of the Comstock, for the obedience they were taught in saying yes to sex with their husband, has left them no option but the raise any child they become pregnant with. An even deeper issue with this law was the lack of freedom it created for woman. Without the legalization of contraceptives, woman had no sexual freedom and ultimately no control over their bodies. Both Goldman and Sanger witnessed firsthand, how tragic and brutal unwanted births or botched abortions were. The fight for the legalization of birth control, was also a fight for the freedom for women.
