Bandura's social-cognitive theory's main idea is that people learn from models; what they learn from a model depends on how they interpret the situation cognitively and emotionally.

Bandura points out that what an observer learns from watching someone else will depend on two cognitive elements: what she pays attention to and what she is able to remember. Because attentional abilities, memory, physical capabilities, and motivations change with age, what a child learns from any given modeled event may be quite different from what an adult learns from an identical event.

(Boyd & Bee, 2015)

Piaget observed that during this period (between the ages of 2 and 7 years), children's language makes rapid progress. Piaget's theory describes language as "symbolic" allowing them to venture beyond the "here and now" and to talk about such things as the past, the future, people, feelings, and events. During this time, children's language often shows instances of what Piaget termed "egocentrism."

(Boyd & Bee, 2015)

According to Piaget, children's language development at this age reveals the movement of their thinking from immature to mature and from illogical to logical. Children's language also reflects their ability to "de-centre", or view things in a perspective other than their own.

(Boyd & Bee, 2015)

In middle adulthood (ages 20-40,) many changes occur. The brain diminishes a bit, a loss in reproductive capacity, and bone mass declines. The biggest change however is vision and hearing. In the cognitive domain, some abilities improve while others slow down. Abstract thinking, problem-solving, processing speed, and memory all begin to decline. Relationships with their family get stronger and relationships with their friends drift apart. Improvement in marital satisfaction may also derive from middle-aged adults' increased sense of control.

(Boyd & Bee, 2015)

Thomas has quit his job as a Sales Representative, and has moved to the outskirts of York, England, UK to be closer to wildlife areas. His father, Charles, had not been able to make a physical or emotional connection with Thomas since the first week he was born due to COVID-19 hospitalization. Charles did not come home from the hospital for Thomas's first 4 months of life, and when he did make it home, Charles was too weak to carry out parental duties. Factors such as diet and exercise slow these declines, but many of them are inevitable. Primary aging is the inevitable aging process and is attributed by gray hair, wrinkles, and changes in vision. In contrast, Secondary aging is the result of environmental factors such as health habits or disease.

Two spurts in brain growth in early adulthood. A major spurt in the frontal lobes-- the area of the brain devoted to logic, planning, and emotional control (begins at age 17, continues until 21-22).

According to Anderson (2015), the development of the adolescent brain is affected by the individual's environment, hormones, and introduction of risk-taking behaviors, such as substance abuse and sexual activity. Anderson (2015) also elaborates on genetics and environmental factors, such as the level of substance abuse and parental care, which also affect brain development in teens. Environmental changes can influence genetic expression, and these expressions can be passed down to the individual's offspring. (Anderson, 2015).

In late adulthood (ages 65- death,) a person goes through a good deal of changes. The brain goes through four major brain alterations: a reduction of brain weight, a loss of gray matter, a decline in the density of dendrites, and slower synaptic speed. As many reach late adulthood, they also see declines in sensory and other physical functions. For example, vision, hearing loss, taste, smell, and touch all dwindle down. As for the cognitive aspect, the changes are fairly small. Older adults, (65-75), show little or no average decline on few measures, such as vocabulary knowledge, however the old old and oldest old show declines on virtually all measures of intellectual skill. Family around this time is very important because when one reaches old old and oldest old, caring for themselves can sometimes become a challenge.

(Boyd & Bee, 2015)
