I taught math for 8 years and consider myself a huge math nerd, so I was interested in taking this IAT. My results said that I had a 'moderate automatic association for male with science and female with arts'. I guess I am not surprised by these results as I think our 'culture norm' really does push males towards STEM fields and women towards arts. I do feel that I am in touch with any biases I hold--as a school counselor I was constantly asked to examine and re-examine this throughout my master's program.

I did the IAT Reflection on age since I am probably the oldest member of this class! It revealed that I while I have a slight preference for younger people over older people, my scores were just about equal. I spend a lot of time around people of all ages, so these results do not surprise me. However in reading the results of others, 60% of the test takers have a strong/moderate preference for young over older people. I have many friends in their 50's and 60's who have lost their jobs..and it is so hard to get a new job. And when they do, it is certainly not the kind of professional job they held before. There appears to be great bias against hiring older people..and by older I don't mean ancient! I really enjoyed doing this task. Lots of "food for thought".

I completed the IAT for Age. It stated that I have a slight preference for young over old since I clicked the button faster when young was paired with good words- however I think my right hand is just quicker than the left:)
I honestly think I have more of a bias towards younger generations than older. I even selected that I prefer older to younger in some of the questions - I have always been appreciative of my older peers and colleagues in and out of the profession. So I was not certain that I agree with these results so I may not be in touch with this bias as noted from this IAT however completing this task will make me more aware of its possibility.

I took a few of these tests and the results that showed my highest bias were in the Career-Gender IAT. I am not surprised by this because I grew up in a family where my mom stayed at home until my siblings and I were in middle school and my dad always worked full-time. In the U.S., there seems to be a stereotype that females are more likely to stay home and raise children than men. I hope that our culture continues to grow toward gender equality. I want to continue to be more aware of my expectations of my students' interests based on their gender.

I did question the results because I did the male and career matching last, and by then I was used to the names and categories given. IAT addresses this concern in their notes at the end.
"What About Order Effects?
One very common question is about the order of the parts of the IAT. The answer is yes, the order in which you take the test can influence on your overall results. But, the effect is very small."
I try to be aware of the biases that creep into my world and the world around me.

Due to the expectations of society, one is to be thin and look like the local models on the runways. We as a county also are focusing on wellness v/s weight which is a step in the right direction. My results were moderate preference yet I see people as they reflect themselves. I grew up with thin people and then married into a heavier weight status. All people are acceptable and all of us, whether we are thin or fat, are special and unique. As educators, children and colleagues should be seen for whom they are v/s the outside makeup. I feel that I accept people and want everyone to be happy with who they are and what they goals in life are. I try really hard that if a bias should arrive that I try to stop and think and reflect on how to adjust that bias and not allow its ugliness to show.

Although the results show my preference is younger people maybe that's why I went into teaching in the first place. It made me think differently about how I may be quick to react and that our brains are very complex. I find this interesting and would love to try more to see where my hidden biases may be. In the classroom this really makes me think about how I treat my students all as individuals and need to ensure that I do not have any preconceived bias. Afton

I chose to respond to this because I think my experience shows how children can be influenced towards being biased. My father was raised in New Orleans. He was considered a New Orleans Creole (French/Spanish ancestry). My dad is considered "passe blanc" (passing for white). This is very important in the Creole community in New Orleans still because the whiter/lighter you are, the "better" you are. My dad married my mom (who most people would say is light skinned) but she is not a New Orleans Creole and surely is not passe blanc. Most of my life she was not accepted by my New Orleans relatives because she was "black". Of course they never actually said these words to her but it was always there. My siblings and I were raised here in Frederick where we always thought that this was so ridiculous but I never understood the extent of it until I moved there. This attitude (while not as extensive) is still found there in the Creole community die-hards. To the day my grandmother dies, you'd better not tell her she was black. I still have knucklehead relatives there that feel this way that I have removed myself from because I think it's racist. I definitely did not want my children raised with these attitudes just because they happen to be light-skinned. I work very hard to make sure that I "catch myself" when these thoughts appear. One example would be using the term "good hair and bad hair". People in my family used these terms. It took a person that I went to school with to point out, just that the hair is courser doesn't mean it is "bad hair". These are things that we heard from out New Orleans relatives and it was terrible. Unfortunately, it took a while to learn the lighter isn't better and that what they were saying was wrong.

I work closely with individuals with disabilities and I really love working with them. Selecting a particular key to represent a code (able/disable and good/bad phrases really didn't have time to reflect what I felt when I saw the words I feel I spent more time analyzing which key I was to select than having a feeling toward disable or able. I do have many more people in my life that are abled and not a lot of disabled people in my life outside of work, but overall I feel like I empathize and have a deeper understanding with individuals struggles.

"Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for White people over Black people". I disagree with this statement in that I was not raised with biases or prejudices by my community or parents; I look at race as just the outside of us and not who we are inside; kids are kids not matter what their skin tone is as adults are adults-meaning we all make mistakes, we are all working to support ourselves or families; we all celebrate a holiday of some sort and enjoy our leisure time. As the news, unfortunately, has nothing but bad news, if one pays close attention, blacks are not the ONLY ones committing some sort of crime; many people of all races are committing crimes for various reasons these days. Unfortunately I believe that our world still holds many biases against black people for a variety of reasons, and I am very aware of certain biases I still hold inside, even if I do not express them. I know that I treat everyone the same; I know that it is not a front and that I give everyone an equal chance because everyone has a story from where they came from and where they are trying to go.
