The SEM Scanner is brought to medical practice by Bruin Biometrics (BBI). BBI’s work on SEM Scanner has been recognized with a Frost & Sullivan New Product Innovation Award and a Health Service Journal Best Product or Innovation for Patient Safety Award.BBI is based in Los Angeles and maintains a European office in Manchester, UK. The SEM Scanner first made it's debut in clinical trials in the United Kingdom during the year of 2014. The SEM Scanner was recently FDA cleared in the United States and reported about on medgadget.com January 4th of this year.

"The SEM Scanner™, is a hand-held, portable, skin tissue assessment device that detects early, pressure-induced tissue damage – including pressure ulcers and Deep Tissue Injuries (DTI)s. It does this by detecting changes in sub-epidermal moisture (SEM), a biophysical marker associated with localized edema and tissue fluid in the inflammatory phase. SEM has been found to indicate tissue damage 3-10 days before visual skin damage or pressure ulcer formation.

The SEM Scanner™ has been successfully used in practice to generate real-time insight to confirm early detection of tissue damage and to target interventions, leading to lower incidence, earlier recovery and lower costs of care.

The SEM ScannerTM uses the principles of bioimpedance technology. An integrated sensor emits a low frequency current to measure relative tissue capacitance. This measure of capacitance is translated into a calibrated SEM value. An increase in the presence of moisture (i.e., localised tissue oedema) is reflected as an increase in tissue capacitance and thereby a higher SEM value."

(Bruin Biometrics.

Pressure ulcers occur when underlying tissue breaks down from the inside of the body to the outward side usually due to increased pressure over the area for an extended amount of time. Pressure ulcers most often occur in the areas of the bony prominence of the body as seen in the linked image below. Pressure ulcers can lead to pain, disfigurement, infection and death and they are often times extremely difficult to diagnose.

Current factors that limit the early detection and prevention of pressure ulcers include some of the most simple problems:

Assessment tools are limited to doctors, professionals, and nursing staff.

By the time pressure ulcer damage is visible on the surface of the skin greater injury has already effected the underlying tissue.

Diagnosing pressure ulcers without medical tools or equipment is considered a subjective assessment that often depends on who is providing the clinical assessment and their experience, judgement, and skills.

https://www.slideshare.net/Drkabiru2012/pressure-sore-73462306

Personal Opinions and Why I Think the Way I Do:

I think that the SEM Scanner is an excellent invention and should be considered a vital tool in all healthcare facilities. I am however, a little skeptical on the technology of the device and would want to talk to a company representative about the science behind the BBI SEM Scanner. Overall, I believe that prevention of pressure ulcers is a huge key to decreasing hospital stays and decreasing infection rates and that it will save healthcare facilities mass amounts of money by using the simple method of health care prevention. I personally love the idea of the SEM Scanner and all of the data that I have had the privilege to cover in this presentation. My pros are stated above and they are pretty straight forward, but my cons about the new equipment could be gray to some readers. I would like to discuss my cons as follows: As a staff nurse, I would be concerned about costs of the SEM Scanners and if all healthcare facilities would be willing to purchase them and pay for their employees to go through proper training and education hours. I am also concerned that not all healthcare professionals would be open to the SEM Scanner and that some would refuse to use the device because it strays aside from their usual clinical practice that they are most comfortable with.
