In one version of the story, the gods combine all of their divine energy to create a being that could destroy Raktabija. In another version of the tale, only Durga produces/summons Kali.     Kali is the goddess of death and time, and as such her greatest attribution is her ability to grant moksha. Her seemingly gorey avatars symbolize a liberation of the cycle of life in death.
