Der Papst verteidigte das Kloster immer wieder gegen weltliche und geistliche Herrscher, die Besitzansprüche gegen Cluny geltend machen wollten. Rief sie zu mehreren Gelegenheit immer wieder zur Verteidigung Clunys auf und drohte Zuwiderhandelnden mit der Exkommunikation.
