Hosseini represents Amir and Hassan's relationship through the use of flashbacks, memories retold to readers by Amir. According to Amir's recollection of his childhood, Amir and Hassan had a strong relationship, almost brother like. They spent most of their free time together, and even had their own hangout spot by a pomegranate tree, which is a symbol of their friendship. Despite their friendship though, Amir was a Hazara while Amir was a Pashtun, which led to others discriminating against their friendship. Amir also found himself to be superior to Hassan because of this societal class structure, which is why he expressed jealously when Baba favored Hassan over him. Their relationship began to change after the incident that occurred in the ally during the winter of 1975. Amir had to choose between valuing the friendship he had with Hassan, or familial relationship he wanted with Baba, and ultimately chose his father, sacrificing Hassan for the kite. From that point on, their friendship fell apart, mostly because of Amir. He couldn't handle the immense guilt he felt, viewing himself as the monster. But instead of focusing on trying to fix that aspect of himself, he embraced it, framing Hassan for theft, ridding Hassan from his life for good. Though their friendship is over, Amir is still haunted by anything that reminds him of Hassan. He has the relationship he's always wanted with his father, but is forced to reflect if it was really worth it as he suffers for the consequences of his actions.

Being the protagonist, Amir is presented as a round character, being layered and having many flaws. He currently has the potential of becoming a dynamic character due to the regret in expresses in the story over his actions, hinting as him wanting to change into a better person. Hassan on the other hand is presented as a flat character, not having that complexities and remaining kind and loyal to Amir no matter what. He currently may be a static character, as even when the incident did happen to him, he never blamed Amir, and still even wanted to continue their friendship.
