I think that being a caregiver will let you learn about yourself. Caregiving comes with problems you will have to overcome and that will be a challenge to you. Caregiving makes the caregiver feel a sense of joy in that they are helping someone else live a higher quality of life.

Stressors for caregivers

A lot of caregivers deal with elderly who suffer from dementia. People who have dementia will forget a lot of things and their memory will worsen as time goes on but they also experience emotions very strongly. Emotions experienced by the elderly will often get taken out onto the caregiver who is just trying to help and there is a sense of frustration for the caregiver. Another stressor is the distance between the caregiver and the one being taken care of. Another stressor is having to take care of someone on top of already having to take care of their family.

I think the caregiver's family has to represent the biggest support they have. A caregiver also has to be able to support themselves enough where they do not lose themselves in the process because there is nothing wrong with needing help. A good diet as well will help a caregiver be able to accomplish things throughout the day. Helping the caregiver with task to diminish the sense of weight they feel on their shoulders will go a long way.

Caregiving theory

A person changes how they view themselves to someone else as they continue to be a caregiver for someone.
The family caregiver theory states that there are five stages. Stage one is that you do caregiving acts without really thinking of it as caregiving. In stage two the caregiving intensifies to the point where you notice that you in fact a caregiver. In stage three your identity as a caregiver is equal to your relationship identity to the person prior to caregiving (ex: wife/husband). In stage four the caregiving is more what you identify with rather than how your relationship was prior and you start thinking of nursing homes. In stage five you have formal help (nursing home) and you get to focus on getting your relationship back rather than becoming more of a caregiver.

Caregivers are becoming harder and harder to find. Nursing homes are becoming more and more short staffed. Caregivers are underpaid in my opinion and should be paid more than minimum wage. Caregivers suffer from mental health from the stress and thing they see on a daily basis and sometimes become numb to things like death because they are around it more often then others.
