The 1952 presidential campaign was the first to use TV commercial. Take a look at the campaign ads, how do they compare to the ones you see from candidates in more recent history? What is similar and what is different?

The ads from 1952 seem less formal, but also more personal. None of them seemed to have any real statistics or information though, just like most of what we seen today. The cartoon is the closest ad to anything I see on TV today. Bashing the other candidate by basically saying "they suck, they're worse than me, so vote for me."

The ads from 1952 feel as though they are speaking to the viewer directly. Often in a lot of modern political ads the candidates or narrators act as though they're speaking to a crowd of people. These ads are more intimate, but this was also a time when people invited strangers in for coffee or lemonade on a regular basis. Both modern and antiquated appeal to the popular culture of the time. Although it's anecdotal evidence, people in the 1950s often took a more trusting and extroverted approach to others. In modern times, people are more wary of strangers and usually keep within their immediate friend groups. The ad agencies consider this and make the ads accordingly.

The campaign ads from 1952 are a lot less cruel than they are now to the other candidates. In the ads nowadays they attack the other candidates in order for you to vote for them. The ads from 1952 are also less quality and don't state many points on why you should vote for them.
