Chapter 4: Coffee/Class/ 376-382: Gans, The Uses of Poverty by

In Uses of poverty: The poor pay all, Herbert J.Gans discusses how the poor confront social conditions, analysis degradation of the poor and, he also analysis how the poor perform vital services and functions in the society. How this discussion relates to the biography of the current conditions is, I feel like when people complain of going through poverty sometimes it's not only about being financial poor. People turn to be sometimes educationally poor, mentally poor, maritally poor but overall, it really just depends on whatever way the person portrays their status of poverty towards others. Another way in which this discussion relates to current conditions is, the poor have a lot of functions in our society. For example, doing little side jobs such as, domestic work and many other side jobs to help sustain their families. I just feel like if it wasn't for their help, this country would be very different, and people would struggle a lot, so they really do play a big role in the current society.

383-394: Morris & Grimes, Moving Up....1

In moving up by Morris and Grimes, we learn that, as we grow up in life, it is important to sacrifice, aim for bigger goals and work hard to achieve our goals in life. How Morris and Grimes discussion of moving up relates to current condition is, we all are different some of us are rased in poor families while others are raised in a very wealthy families, some of us look up to our parents because of their achievement but some us choose to achieve goals and reach further in life than our parents but at end of the day whatever decision we choose to take for ourselves, we still are going to have to work hard to achieve those goals because at the end of the day, life is not a bed of roses. How i have seen this discussion play out in my life is, growing up as a kid, i always wanted to be a model and journalist because i just felt like it was an easy occupation but, When i grew up i did my research and found out that, those occupations are good but they aren't stable and my parents told me to look into nursing. In the beginning I didn't want to do it cause it just felt like it was difficult due to the fact that i was taking science classes while in high school and they were hard. When i got into college, i still didn't want to do nursing like my parents put me under pressure and were like you have to do it and i was like okay cool. As time went by, I don't know what happen but all of a sudden, i just developed this interest and encouragement for nursing and am actually willing to do it now because, regardless of how hard it is, with hard work and patient, i believe i will make it through. I still know and i do acknowledge the fact that this journey won't be an easy journey, but as i grow, i learn that money rules the world and being independent is something i want for myself so regardless of how hard this journey is going to be am willing to be patient, work hard and achieve this goal and, i just feel like growth, learning, sacrifices, moving up with life and seeing different situations in life made come to this conclusion. How this change my world of view is, it makes me realize that nothing good in life comes easily so if i want to be responsible and wealthy, i have to work hard, be patient, and stay focus to achieve the goals i want.

In The U.S Upper Class by Stephen Higley, we learn that social inequality is a fact of life in all societies. How this topic can be related to the current life conditions is, in our society today, people are not equally treated like in some societies others are highly respected because of wealth, background, race and power. At the end of the day, people from the upper classes are respected and valued in the society just because of their wealth and power but for me i don't see it in such way. Because i feel like because someone is wealthier than another person does't mean they are better than the person and society always forgets that fact because at the end of the day, we all are going to die and leave all the wealth behind so, sometimes we shouldn't underestimate people because the are less richer than others because, at the end of the day, we all are humans and would all die one day and leave this earth empty handed as we came into it.

Required entry: Watch the Youtube video "Wealth Inequality in the United States"

In the video wealth inequality in the United States, I learn that wealth is not fairly distributed in the United States. The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer and this is the reality of our society today. People of the upper class are getting more job opportunities than the people from the lower class whom even need the job more. I think this is really frustrating because some people work so hard to keep up with their needs but regardless how much time they work, they are still unable to keep up with the lifestyle of living in the United States because they little amount of money they make, they government profits of halve of the money and if the government is not profiting of halve of the money, then prices od things are going up like for example gas prices have gone up lately so much and I can imagine how difficult it is for people of the lower class to keep up with all this life needs and prices increasing everyday. I know covid has led to a lot of economic problems in the country which has made a lot of people loose their job or which has just made life harder in general for some people but, however some people out there have no problems regardless of how issues the country faces. How this video can be related to different things i have learned in this section of this course is, In the U.S Upper Class by Morris and Grimes, the authors talk about how people are not fairly treated in the society based on their job occupations. Some people get the best treatment because of how they are being ranked and praised in the community by others just because of their occupation while some are being disrespected and neglected because of their occupation. All this is because of the inequality distribution of wealth in the U.S because people tend to have low respect and underestimate other people because of their carrier option. I think is really wrong that some people are being treated like that and sometimes I just think that gratitude should be very much showed to the people of the lower class because they are the one that help keep this country in a proper state. And I also thing that it is so frustrating that some people have to work hours and hours and still don't make enough while other work less and make more money depending on the job carrier for example when it comes to teaching. I have little and older siblings. My youngest two siblings are in kindergarten. Whenever they come back from school with their homework's, sometimes my parents would struggle to help them with their homework's but it get's really tiring and frustrating for them because as much as they want to do it, they don't have the patient to explain some things to the point where the kids understand better. My point is teacher go through a lot trying to explain and educate this kids and if you look at their pay you will notice they don't even make that much. At the end of the day I just think that everyone cant be at the upper class but however let the government and society give people more job opportunities so people can be able to accomplish their dreams without having to feel like their weekly pay can't feed up to their lifestyle.

Chapter 6: Sports/Race (Omit Section 4, 164-169)

In Section 4 of JCB, we learn that norms and deviance can socially control the concepts of sports. How the discussion of norms and deviance in sports relate to current conditions is, sports play's a big role in a lot of people's lives and serves as a great source of entertainment. People travel the world to watch a football, soccer, basketball, softball games, etc. Some people bet money on sports while a lot of other people admire and look up to athletes as their role models. An example of how norms and deviance can be related to current living conditions is a lot of youtubers such as king Cid, Jake Paul, and many others literally spend time filming boxing videos for entertainment and people love these videos and this has influenced many other young youtubers to film such videos. Throughout these videos, people do get hurt but however it's never considered as a problem due to the fact other youtubers are starting to copy such acts of filming such videos. Am not saying that boxing is illegal, my point is these youtubers are not doing it in the right way but however no one is saying anything about it because, we are already used to seeing such videos over and over and they people make it seem like because a certain person is doing it is okay so other should also participate in it. Recently Logan Paul and Mayweather had recently got into a fight and there was really no point to the fight but they did it for the entertainment and money. Mayweather was clearly the better fighter, as was expected, but Paul utilized his huge height and weight advantage to lean on Mayweather and avoid taking more than one or two clean shots at a time from the former multi-division world champion. All this goes to show how much sports serves as a form of entertainment in our community and people are willing to do anything to enhance a name for themselves. A deviance that may destroy an athletes carrier is the consumption of drugs. some athletes consume drugs so they feel more energetic in the field and this is not healthy because they are not only deceiving themselves but they are also deceiving the young generation that see them as role models. Athletes shouldn't consume drugs because it might not only destroy their health but it might cause them to loose their carrier. Not only athletes but we all should be conscious of our actions because whatever we do might not only affect us but it might also affect the younger generation.

(H) 360-368: Page, Showing My Color

In showing my color by Clearance Page, we learn that race and ethnicity is a major divide in the United States because our race and ethnicity may sometimes open doors and give people more life opportunities, give some people more privilege, and may also separate us from others. How Page's discussion of skin color, race and ethnicity can be connected to current issues is, race has always been an issue in the world and it still an ongoing factor that affects the world. I would definitely say it has gotten better as compared to the 90's and 2000's. An example of how his discussion of racism may be related to the current condition is racism still exist in the United States, people of color die every day from, gun violence, police violence and as soon as we decide to peacefully protest, it turns to a conflict. I remember back in 2020 there was an incident that happen in Minneapolis to a young black man called George Floyd. He was murdered by a white police officer just because the white police officer suspected him to have used counter filled twenty-dollar bill. He followed and handcuffed him and after some time he kneeled on his neck and back for about 9 minutes and the next thing was history. Just like that he murdered and innocent black man just because of his wrong thoughts. After this incident, it took quite a long time before this police office was sent to trial because he was white and had privilege. But after sometimes, thankfully to all the people fought for this case, the police officer was sent to trial and was sentenced 22 and a halve years to prison. Another example of an incident that had happened was the Kyle Rittenhouse case. This white boy was roaming around the streets of Kenosha acting as self defined militia during a protest in 2020. Kyle was send to trial and was found not guilty for each charges. After he had been acquitted on all counts, he rushed from the room then later returned and was calmed and offered water by his lawyers as he sobbed and gulped for air. To me I understand the fact that he was a teen and maybe reacted without thinking but like finding him not guilty after shooting and not only one but two people, definitely had something to do with him being white. Like am not trying to be racist but I just feel like that case was not fair because in my opinion I think if it was a black person, he would have being directly sent to Juvenile without any second thoughts. I feel like even though he was young he should have being charged with verdict or at least charged with some years in juvenile with probation so, he learns his lesson. At the end of the day, the situation happened, he was set free things were said but, it still didn't change the fact that he was set free because that's just they world we live in were like the author educates us in this chapter that, our race would open and close doors of opportunity but on the other hand it would give some people privilege over others. How i have seen this discussion play out in my life is growing up as a kid, other kids at school would always judge me for my hair and skin color because I had a darker skin color so, they always felt like it was right to treat me a certain type of way. Kids in school would bully me and I couldn't do anything about it because I went to a mostly all white school back in kindergarten. When i went to high school, it was a little different because my school had different races but however other races always felt like it was right for them to always say they N-word because they were from they bay and the grew up saying the word so to them it was alright to say it. In the beginning I would get really offended when non-black people would say that around me but now I just feel its just never going to change like, its people that would always say it regardless of how much time we preach about it so to me when people say it, it don't bother me anymore. How this reading can related to other things i have learned in this course is racism and segregation would always be a issue in the world for example in the lectures we talked about genocide and mostly when we hear about genocide we directly think of Hitler and most people don't know that genocide is something that has happened in a lot of other countries and it is still happening for example in Africa, India and Japan. And is crazy to think that things like this only would have happened in the 90's but unfortunately it is still people out there that experience such things. In the lectures we also learn that Stockton was ranked as one of the most racially and ethnically diverse city in the United States which am not really surprised because, Stockton is made up of a lot of black people. Racism and Segregation is something that has being going on in the world for over years now and i feel like it would never stop because it's always going to be people out there with a certain type of hate towards a specific race which it's just delusional to me because at the end of the day, we all are the same in the eyes of God and we all are unique in our own ways regardless of our skin color, hair, accent, gender or ethnicity. We should educate the younger generation so they don't make the same mistakes or go through the hardships our parents and relatives went through.

(H) 369-375: Ezekiel, The Racist Mind

In The Racist Mind, Raphael Ezekiel discusses about racial hatred. They are people that hate others because they look different. We live in a community were white people are predominate and are a seldom to everyday life. Our everyday experiences tells us that racism is not only the hate towards a certain group of people because of their skin color or ethnicity but it can also be considered as prejudice and discrimination against people on the basis of their ethnic group, abilities, qualities or sex. How Ezekiel discussion of racism relates to the current conditions is, we face racism in our everyday lives not just in a form of racism but also in a form of discrimination and prejudice. People are being denied jobs because of their race, people are being judged and look down on because of their sex while others feel insecure because of how the community talks about their body type or looks. And example of an incident that recently happened was when the governor of Florida passed a law
aimed to protecting white people from feeling "discomfort"
or "guilt" while learning about racism of the nation's past. This law basically stated that white people would prohibit private businesses and public schools from training staff or student about racism in the U.S in a way that makes them feel "discomfort" and they are free to report any type of discomfort to the police. To me i think the governor is trying hold on the white supremacist as long as he can because they country has being more modernized not because of the white people but because of the different races that makeup the country. I think that law is very irrelevant because it goes to show how the government is making white people to have more privilege over other people and i think is unfair that racism can't be properly taught to student because they may feel discomforted towards such topic. Racism is a real thing that a lot of people experience everyday, a lot of people loose their life due to the fact that the look a certain type of way or cause their skin color is different from others. It is important that we educate the younger generation of topics such as racism, police brutality, prejudice and discrimination because it might help them in the future and prevent them from a lot of trouble. How i have seen the discussion of racism play out in my life is, recently Ukraine has being going through a war with Russia and a lot of people have being trying to leave the country for their safety and their families safety but however, Africans were not allowed to live the country because they were stuck for days trying to cross the neighboring Europe countries huddled in cold, without food or shelter and being held by the Ukrainian authorities who pushed them to the ends of long lines and even beat them, while letting Ukrainians go through. This affected me because my dad knew a couple of friends that were going through this situation and it was very frustrating to see his friends and his family going through such situation but, after much efforts he was able to assist them with some money so they could try leaving Ukraine. How Ezekiel conception of racism challenges the world view is, racism is an on going thing. As a young black girl living in the United States, i have learned a lot of things, what my ancestors had to go through just to make sure we black people can freely walk the streets without feeling insecure but, it still surprises me that a lot people still go through all this things our ancestors fought for. At the end of the day am glad that things have gotten way better as compared to the past. I think we should educate the younger generation about all this things so in the next generation they are able to face this situations and know how to handle them in the right way.

I asked a couple of friends their definition of race and their responses were quite all different some said race is the color of your skin and a social background that differentiates two different people, while others said race is the difference between the biological and social difference between two different people, while some said race is someone's skin color and others said race is the country in which someone was originally born. Some people mention that they know their race from their skin color, some said they know their race from the stories told to them by their parents while some said the know their race from their parent's background and ancestral believes. Moving forward into this interview some told me how they learned their race was by research, friends, parents and they community they lived in. Some of them mentioned that some early messages they had received about race in general was black people are "ghetto", white people don't know how to cook or season their food, Asians are smart and black people have the best taste and choice in music. During the interview some of my friends told me they could determine someone's race by looking at their skin color, their accents, their hair type, social behaviors and even food preferences which was really surprising to me. Lastly, I asked them how people could determine what raced they were, and all their responses was "from my skin color and how they talked". From all these very much not different but kind of the same responses I got, I would definitely say race is not a person's skin color or how the talk but rather from what i have learned from this class concerning this topic of race, I would say race is a cultural, biological characteristics and socially constructed behaviors that are often common between two different people. What it means to say race is socially constructed is, acknowledging the ways that racial difference and the meaning that arise from those differences for example when it comes to race white people Vs, Black people we all know that when it comes to socially constructing the difference between white people and black people, we would definitely say white people, have more power and privilege while black people are always being violated and never respected and we act ghetto. We have a lot of other socially characteristics that differentiate other races from each other such as skin color, hair type, accents, eye colors etc. Race is a very important topic and crises in our community and we all should be able to know our race, the different characteristics and social constructed behaviors that surround our race so we can be able to educate the younger generation
