Women were denied jobs by law and tradition. It was believed that women were meant to cook, clean, and take care of the children around the house, and working was a "man's job." Even children in the house were brought up that way from a young. Young girls would help their mothers cook and clean around the house while young boys were taught the differences in what women and men were traditionally supposed to do. The little jobs they did have were usually sewing clothes and cleaning. If they owned houses and got married, the house would become the husband's. Also, women were not allowed to vote.

She was known as the "Napoleon of the woman's rights movement." Anthony was the Vice President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1890 but later in 1892, she became the President. Wherever she went, she always attracted large crowds with her opinions on woman's rights. She even helped to open the University of Rochester for women in the 1900's.
