We can create a map using Padlet, and ask students to check in their location (see image below). This is a nice visualisation, and we can then build our discussion based on the map. As mentioned by others, it is also good to know the different time zones we need to cater to from this activity. :)

For an icebreaker, I would make use of an event that has affected everyone. A case in point is to ask students to shared their experiences on the impact of COVID-19 on their lives and by extension the world around them. I will then ask them to link these impacts to the subject of sustainability. It becomes easier because they have had first hand experiences. Students can comment on the padlet while making use of relevant images and videos. Students can also make use of maps to showcase areas that have been hit hard by COVID-19 globally

Get students to upload a photo of something meaningful to them with a short description.

Our students are normally new to education, but are experienced NHS clinicians. Getting them going with interacting can be a challenge, but there are some tasks that i've learned through experience definitely get students talking to eachother, and perhaps even becoming vocal. Note the questions are positive (glass half full) but responses are......normally overwhelmingly negative:

1. Please prepare three words that you feel describes how wonderful things are in the NHS at the moment? When you have done this, we can look at themes, and see if we can pull something together.

This might seem silly, but it gets learners sharing experiences, enables them to see similarities within workplace contexts, support one another, enabes learners to identify shared understanding and common goals. It also generate some humour which is always helpful. It's much different from asking students to introduce themselves and the areas they work in (which becomes a little repetitive for some of our learners).

The rescue line if things get a little heated online or in the classroom was shared with me by a great teaching role model: So....what can we learn?
