The story begins when Watson is summoned to Holmes' residence. There, the two talked to a woman named Mrs. Merrilow. She tells the story of how she believes a woman living in her house, Mrs. Ronder, committed some past crime. Mrs. Merrilow also conveys that Mrs. Ronder would badly like to see Sherlock before she dies, and makes it known that her health has been deteriorating.
Sherlock and Watson travel to meet with her. Mrs. Ronder recounts the story of how she and her lover Leonardo conspired and murdered her husband, leaving her face horribly scarred in the process.

The story is less a mystery and more of a retelling of events. Mrs. Ronder's testimony is the only real "evidence" featured, but she mentions the weapon they used to kill her husband. This is irrelevant, however, because the case of his death has already been ruled an accident.

The whole story is based on a red herring: the lion. The lion was intended to be a red herring, distracting authorities from the real cause of the murder

We know that Mrs. Ronder and Leonardo killed her husband. They did this because he was an abusive partner and a general nuisance. They were also romantically involved, and with her husband out of the way they could be together.

Another motive could be that Mrs. Ronder considered her husband such a threat to her that she thought killing him would be the only way to stop him, and she turned to her lover and confidant, Leonardo. Together they planned to kill him, but there was an accident and Leonardo ran away, leaving Mrs. Ronder to the mercy of the released lion.

Although the town doesn't exist, there are many similarly named places in England where it may have been based upon. It's not usually the kind of material I typically read, but I enjoyed perusing it nonetheless, and it had a healthy dose of intrigue and mystery. I also enjoyed how there were plot twists that made it more interesting and surprising.

The Veiled Lodger was a very interesting and engaging story. I liked how Mrs.Ronder was completely open to explaining the whole story. I also liked how much different the actual story was rather than the original story sherlock had thought. I though it added a nice twist to the story. The only thing I disliked about it was it was too short.
