Brooke Zevon
Topic/Thematic Concept: mental illnesses, having support
Explanation: I chose this poem because the author puts no blame, hatred, or fear towards people with mental illnesses. Instead of informing readers that people with schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and eating disorders are abnormal, he takes a different approach. The author says how people with mental illnesses are superheroes, because they get up every morning, and put on a cape and a fake smile. They hide behind a mask people don't even know exsist; and for that reason, they should never feel alone. The author explains how telling someone "You're not alone" may not solve the person's problems, but it makes them feel worth something. Nobody should ever feel alone, and this poem emphasizes it.

Especially the two old men "switched" races by having the white man say he's not black and vice-versa. It made me think about how if those labels were switched, that would would society shaped them into someone they are not and be judged off of stereotypes.
This reminds us to not simply judge others based on what they look like or where they came from, but for who they actually are. You are most than just a label.
