Their Eyes Were Watching God by Laura Starcher

One of the most important works of twentieth-century American literature, Zora Neale Hurston's beloved 1937 classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston's masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published—perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature.

I chose to draw a pear tree. Part of it healthy and thriving, part of it dying in the harsh cold, and part of it growing sick and dying from an ugly skull. The healthy thriving part of the tree with the bees and flowers represents what Janie wants in life. She sees her life as this tree. The beautiful blossoms and bees show the love and happy marriage she wishes to have. The skull and the sickness shows the lack of love she felt in her first marriage. She didn’t love the man she married and it made her feel alone and perhaps if she stayed in the marriage her tree would be nothing more than a stump. Now in her new marriage which she felt would be better than the first as it made her happy, less alone, and possibly even in love. But now she is feeling colder and alone once again as her now husband is too busy being mayor of a new town to love her the way she deserves. Which is represented by the freezing cold in the picture.

I chose to write a poem about a dream to be a pear tree. That is how Janie wants her life to be. Love and marriage with blossoms and bees. She doesn’t want to be alone and she wants to be happy. She wants a happy lovely marriage just like the relationship with the bees and blossoms. She sees her life as the tree. And her failed marriages is causing her tree to go cold, empty, and dying.

She wants love.

I chose to the Enneagram personality test because it's about what guides you. Your heart, your head, or your gut. Janie makes her decisions based on her heart. Even though during the time certain things might keep her from following her heart. Things like how women were viewed and their roles, things like planned marriages, things like how divorce is looked down upon, and how its ok to hit and beat a woman down. These things keep Janie from truly following her heart. But you can tell she really wants to and hopefully now she finally will now that her husband is dead.

(stories from under the cherry tree)

I chose this poem because Janie's former husband Joe often pushed her away but said she had no sympathy and that she wasn’t loving. Before they got married Joe seemed like the perfect guy but he changed. He didn’t stay the same like the stars in the poem. He began to put Janie down to bring himself up and he began to beat her every now and then when she had done something he thought was wrong. He wanted her to be submissive and keep her mouth shut. And when he became sick and his age started to show he would ridicule her as if she was the one sagging and growing old when she was actually 10 years younger than him and still thriving.

Sarah Pownell

This artwork clearly shows the metaphor between Janie and a Pear tree. You can see in the art there is a women who has been drawn as a pear tree. This is the constant imagery and metaphor being used throughout the book. The Janie is this blossoming Pear tree and that things in her life either hurt or help her tree. Like these storms in the background they possibly represent the relationships she has had in her life. These relationships she said was killing her tree and you could tell how unhappy those relationships made her. Just like how she looks sad and unhappy in this work of art.

Janie saw herself as this pear tree and when she was happy and in love her tree would bloom and prosper and when she was sad and cold her tree would start to die. In the book “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie is faced with the hardship of people telling her she must get married and despite her unhappiness in the marriage that she must stay with her husband even when her true passion is to have a happy loving marriage. Instead of marrying someone she loves she is forced to marry a man whom she does not love. Instead of ending an abusive relationship Janie stayed in this marriage as the mayor’s wife. In conclusion Janie has had to ignore her desires to be happy and to find love because of these responsibilities and little choice that had been thrusted upon her.
