Ode To The Onion
by Pablo Neruda

Onion,
luminous flask,
your beauty formed
petal by petal,
crystal scales expanded you
and in the secrecy of the dark earth your belly grew round with dew. Under the earth
the miracle
happened
and when your clumsy
green stem appeared,
and your leaves were born
like swords
in the garden,
the earth heaped up her power showing your naked transparency, and as the remote sea
in lifting the breasts of Aphrodite duplicating the magnolia,
so did the earth
make you,
onion
clear as a planet
and destined
to shine,
constant constellation,
round rose of water,
upon
the table
of the poor.

You make us cry without hurting us. I have praised everything that exists, but to me, onion, you are
more beautiful than a bird
of dazzling feathers,
heavenly globe, platinum goblet, unmoving dance
of the snowy anemone

and the fragrance of the earth lives in your crystalline nature.

--------------------

I like this poem because it expresses the delicacy of describing the beauty and preciousness of onion. It displays the ability and imaginations of the poet to describe, give a visualization, and compare the beauty of onions with anything. This make me feel onion is more adorable than it ever be.

Even if it's a dark or hopeless day, like a rainstorm, but the sky after the rain is always beautiful. The god will lead the wind and rain to carry away that sorrow. Rainbows are like god's promises of giving the brightness and new beginnings.

It can visualize things in his messy room clearly.

How to Paint A Wall
by Joanna Fuchs

While I went off to work one day,
She decided to paint the wall.
And when I came back home that night,
She was curled into a ball.

Her eyes were closed, she was breathing hard,
Her hair was very wet.
From her head to the tips of her pretty toes,
She was covered all in sweat.

She was wrapped in a jacket made of down,
With a fur coat on top of that.
The wall was glowing with new, fresh paint;
On the floor, the paint can sat.

"Sweetheart!" I cried, with a worried look,
"Are you all right, my dear?"
She lazily opened her lovely eyes,
And smiled from ear to ear.

"I knew I could do it," she said with a grin;
"I followed the paint can notes.
It clearly said 'For best results,
Be sure to put on two coats.'"

--------------------

I like this poem because it's a funny one. This poem has play on words with coat, which can define as coating of color and a type of clothing. The real purpose in a paint can is to coat or paint the wall twice, but women misunderstands that she should wear double layers.

Sick
by Shel Silverstein

“I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I’m going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox
And there’s one more--that’s seventeen,
And don’t you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut--my eyes are blue--
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I’m sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button’s caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle’s sprained,
My ‘pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow’s bent, my spine ain’t straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What’s that? What’s that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G’bye, I’m going out to play!”

-------------------

This poem is so creative. I love it! It can express many symptoms of sicks or illnesses that almost everything is possible and impossible from a child, who don't want to do anything because don't want to go to school, but at last he can realize that it isn't a school day. So, he will go out for fun. Such a funny poem!

First Day of School
by Ruth Donnelly

I’ve got a brand new lunchbox,

My shoes are shiny clean.

I’ve got a cool new bookbag,

And a pencil box that’s green.

But I don’t know my teacher

Or where my desk will be

I don’t know if I’ll like the kids

Or if they’ll play with me.

I peek inside my classroom

I stand there for a while

My teacher’s tall and kind of loud

But has a great big smile

And, best of all, she’s got my

Favorite book on the shelf.

I kiss my mother at the door

And walk in by myself.

--------------------

I like this poem because the persona expresses feeling and the emotions of children starting a new day of school, excited and a little bit worried. This poem uses easy words to understand and visualize clearly such as having a lunch box, new shoes, various items, and the environment.
