However, before this, a sequence of events prior lead to the war and subsequent killing of over 17 million people. Prior to this the major forces of power in Europe, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain, France, Italy and Germany, split into two sides and form alliances proposed to help diffuse any conflicts between the lot by providing two powerful sides to back each country up. Despite its defensive nature, the alliances formed, namely the Triple Alliance of Germany, Italy and Austria and the Triple Entente made up of Russia, Britain and France, would do quite the opposite soon leading to one of the greatest conflicts of all time.

This can contribute to the direct cause, the assassination. Disputes between the alliances were prevalent, Russia contested Austria and its ownership of the Balkan Islands. Britain and Germany were head to head in a Naval arms race, with Britain in the lead much to the displeasure of Germany and the Triple Alliance. Disputes with France in North Africa were on the mind of Italy too.

At this time, Bosnia lay as part of Austria-Hungary in the south. Many Bosnian nationals wanted the country to be independent, luckily for them, so did the Serbians who sat south of the border and had the backing of the powerful Russians. The oppressed Bosnian nationalists saw a visit from the archduke as a perfect opportunity to strike back. Serbians aided these nationalists in requiting a team of assassins from the Serbian terrorist group the 'Black Hand'. Both of which were used heavily in the second world war and other conflicts prior. The Russian revolution and similar ideas that came after can also be traced to the start of the war.
