The first world war ignited when Austria’s archduke, Franz Ferdinand, (along with dutches Sophie, who was pregnant at the time) was assassinated on the 28th of June 1914. However, before this, a sequence of events prior lead to the war and subsequent killing of over 17 million people. Prior to this the major forces of power in Europe, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain, France, Italy and Germany, split into two sides and form alliances proposed to help diffuse any conflicts between the lot by providing two powerful sides to back each country up. Despite its defensive nature, the alliances formed, namely the Triple Alliance of Germany, Italy and Austria and the Triple Entente made up of Russia, Britain and France, would do quite the opposite soon leading to one of the greatest conflicts of all time.

The alliances caused an upmost sense of nationalism between and among the two alliances, resulting in the two sides thinking that they are better than each other. This can contribute to the direct cause, the assassination. Disputes between the alliances were prevalent, Russia contested Austria and its ownership of the Balkan Islands. Britain and Germany were head to head in a Naval arms race, with Britain in the lead much to the displeasure of Germany and the Triple Alliance. Disputes with France in North Africa were on the mind of Italy too.

Commonly thought to be the main cause of world war one, Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated on the 28th of June 1914. At this time, Bosnia lay as part of Austria-Hungary in the south. Many Bosnian nationals wanted the country to be independent, luckily for them, so did the Serbians who sat south of the border and had the backing of the powerful Russians. The oppressed Bosnian nationalists saw a visit from the archduke as a perfect opportunity to strike back. Serbians aided these nationalists in requiting a team of assassins from the Serbian terrorist group the 'Black Hand'. Numbers, timing, positions and the royal car pulling up directly in front of an armed gunman, leaving the duke and his wife dead.

The Austrians saw this as a direct attack on their empire and them and their allies the Germans, pointed the finger not only at the Serbian and Bosnian conspirators but also at Russia, this ignited arguments and lead to the other members of each trio joining in. This is regarded as the cause of the first world war.

As well as this machinery and weaponry innovations stemming from the start of the first world war, such as the modern machine gun and chemical warfare with the introduction of chlorine and mustard gas. Both of which were used heavily in the second world war and other conflicts prior. The Russian revolution and similar ideas that came after can also be traced to the start of the war. In summary, the lead up and start of the war brought new technology and levels of conflict, thinking and revolution.
