Napoleon, the pig from Animal Farm, was the leader and dictator of Animal Farm after the Rebellion and removal of Mr. Jones. Saul Alinsky was American community organizer and author who wrote the book Rules for Radicals. In his book there are thirteen stated “Rules for Radicals” that each state different tactics towards gaining and holding power. Particularly three of Saul Alinsky’s tactics towards gaining and holding power are very similar to the tactics used by Napoleon, rule six states, “A good tactic is one your people enjoy,” rule nine states, “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself,” and rule thirteen states, “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

Throughout time a main source of information has been the media. Whether it was on a newspaper or on a TV screen most information about world problems has been acquired from the media. This is very equivalent to animal farm, in the novella the main source of information was from Squealer, but was it always accurate? Squealer represents the mainstream media of today’s generation. Throughout the novella Squealer states false information and statistics, which has also been more common in today’s mainstream. Squealer is also very biased when it comes to his political outlooks and about Napoleon’s ability to lead. During the 2016 election most of the human population could agree that the mainstream media does have very biased political views. The last similarity is that Squealer uses other animals to get his point across to the farm. Almost like how the mainstream media brings in people to be interviewed that usually have the same political views to get their point across to the public.

The United States indeed have many important, famous documents that seem perfect. Truthfully they are not; there are many flaws in the writers' words. Similar to Animal Farm's Seven Commandments, they are changed and rewritten multiple times in history, whether is was in private or out in the open. For instance, in Animal Farm the pigs got ahold of all the power and took for granted. They took it as far as changing the commandments behind the other animals' backs. In addition, the United States' government also changes laws and they too take away rights of people.

Modern life is shaped by the media. The same is true for the past. The knowledge of a population is dictated by the word of the media, and who controls it. Squealer is much like modern media in the sense that the population of the farm has no choice but to take his word for gospel. Today, we have a plethora of news outlets to get information from, but they are often biased and inaccurate. There is no way to know if the information you are getting is true or not, and the media controls entire counties in this fashion. This is true for Animal Farm, because Napoleon has Squealer tell the animals whatever he needs them to believe, and the animals have no capability to believe anything else.

To be a leader, one must be smart and perceptive, and must be able to think ahead of their citizens and enemies. However, some leaders take a "wrong turn" and turn into dictators.

In most instances, total complete power corrupts people. Napoleon and the majority of the pigs in the text The Animal Farm turn unscrupulous after they pertain absolute power. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (John Action). There are many instances throughout the existence of humans in where power has turned people, tribes, villages, and entire nations corrupt because of overwhelming power and in many cases have wanted more and their actions, ways, thoughts, and decisions turned unethical. Sure there are some instances in history that power has had a good outcome like U.S.’s independence, ancient democracies, and many ruler’s reigns like Alexander the great and Julius Cezar, but there are at least double or triple the amount of examples regarding how power corrupts humans and what they create (countries/their constructions). Several examples of millions are as listed, Rome’s end and Britain’s land, and people that have corrupted like Hitler and Bashar al-Assad are just two. Power will corrupt those who grasp it in their hands. Power is a dangerous thing; mind who you give it to and mind who has it.

The means of terror and fear have been used since the beginning of dictatorship. In Animal Farm the leading animals used fear and terror as a way to get the other animals to do the jobs around the farm. Power has always been used in a way to get others to do things, however in these cases fear has been used to scare the animals into doing what the smarter animals think that they don’t have to do. Fear and control has also been used in out history as well. There has been far more than just a few ways that fear has been used to control our people or other people in different countries, but one of the most significant ways that we as a society has seen fear and power as a way to control others was during the time of segregation.

By the mid-1900s, African-Americans were being discriminated and looked down upon again, only 100 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Segregation could be seen all over the US. African-Americans were being separated on buses, in restaurants, and even while using water fountains. Although there was no longer slavery, there was still a fine line of inequality. After reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm and similarly evaluating it, you will find many examples of inequality, some more similar to the Civil Rights movement than you would think. In Animal Farm, the pigs of the farm start to develop laws that end up only benefiting them, instead of the whole farm, similar to Civil Rights when only whites could do certain things. In Animal Farm, the two groups are separated, the pigs staying in the house and going to different places. In the 1900s, whites ealso had specific places to be that African-Americans could not go to. There were various rebellions and protests in both examples. Because of these reasons and more, the Civil Rights Movement and Animal Farm can be compared very closely.

“But the luxuries of which Snowball had once taught the animals to dream, the stalls with electric light and hot and cold water, and the three-day week, were no longer talked about. Napoleon had denounced such ideas as contrary to the spirit of Animalism. The truest happiness, he said, lay in working hard and living frugally.” (Orwell 49). The excerpt is an example how totalitarian characteristics are presented in the dystopia novel, Animal Farm, written by George Orwell. Animal Farm begins with a farm of animals and the farmer, Mr. Jones, was not satisfying the animals’ needs. In turn, the animals overthrow their current “leader”, Mr. Jones, and create the republic of Animal Farm where the dictator, Napoleon comes to power. Throughout the novel, Napoleon and the pigs in the Animal Farm represent the dictatorship and single party beliefs of a totalitarian government and leader. Totalitarian characteristics that are common amongst totalitarian regimes would include: rule of one, single party, usually with a dictator, total control of military, total control of media (newspapers), media, propaganda, etc.), police control with the use of terror as a control tactic, and also control of the economy (study.com). Totalitarian governments try to take “total” control. Napoleon of Animal Farm, Donald Trump of the United States of America, and Vladimir Putin of Russia all show displays of totalitarian leaderships or dictatorships. Donald Trump shows an abundance of control over the military, economics, more favorable to one party and group of people, and ideology to make a “greater” country or living for his citizens. Vladimir Putin uses fear, and strong and assertive leadership skills to present and have a “better” Russia. While in Animal Farm, Napoleon uses propaganda, military and economic control, and fear to have control over the animals of Animal Farm.

In 1946, Animal Farm was written and published by George Orwell. The book talks about how animals are under the rule of a dictator; someone who wields absolute power. Despite the fact that Animal Farm was written in 1946, there are still people today who govern other people in cruel ways. Napoleon in Animal Farm used the other animals for the benefit of himself. In the text of Animal Farm, it says, "From now onwards, Animal Farm would engage in trade with the neighboring farms: not, of course, for any commercial purpose, but simply in order to obtain certain materials which were urgently necessary. The needs of the windmill must override everything else, he said. He was therefore making arrangements to sell a stack of hay and part of the current year's wheat crop, and later on, if more money were needed, it would have to be made up by the sale of eggs, for which there was always a market in Willingdon. The hens, said Napoleon, should welcome this sacrifice as their own special contribution towards the building of the windmill." This excerpt from the book says a lot of things. 1, Napoleon declares trade with neighboring farms. 2, he needs something to trade with. 3, he seizes the hens and their eggs. Not only does he say that he will use the eggs for trade, but also for the benefit of himself and his reputation. If he trades, the other farms will think that the Animal Farm is a farm of plenty. So, comparing this concept of dictatorship to a modern figure in today's time, would be someone who closely resembles Napoleon. And someone like Napoleon is Kim Jong Un of North Korea. After his father died, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un took over, putting forth his rules and standards. And by him taking over and setting standards for the people of North Korea, he clearly doesn't realize the corruption he created with his own hands.
