Artificial Intelligence can be understood to be different things based on the time period it is discussed during. In the 1950s, Artificial intelligence was a task that could be carried out by a machine that a human would have to apply intelligence to accomplish the same task. In the current understanding Artificial Intelligence is understood to be a vast field of study in the discipline of computer science, AI involves developing machines and systems that can perform tasks that require human intelligence. AI possesses multiple subsets of technologies, theories and methods such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks, etc..

AI can be divided into four types, these can be intelligent systems that are currently in use today, and sentient systems, which do not yet exist. To begin with, the first type is the reactive machines, these are AI systems that possess no memory and considered to be task specific. An example of such an AI is Deep Blue by IBM. Deep Blue could play chess and win based on calculating predictions, however it could not use past experiences or wins to affect future outcomes. Moving on, the next type of AI is Limited memory AI, these systems have memory, in a way that such systems can use past experiences to affect future outcomes and decisions. Self-driving cars are an example of this. The next type of AI is the Theory of mind, this is a psychological term, such an AI system is not in existence, this AI would have the ability to recognize and understand emotions, it would be able to predict human behavior. The last type of AI is thought to be Self-awareness, these systems would be able to possess a sense of self and could be considered have consciousness. Self-awareness AI does not yet exist.

Artificial Intelligence has various applications in daily lives of humans, it is being applied to a range of functions in commercial as well as consumer settings. Speech recognition and language processing uses AI algorithms to convert speech to code and vice versa for human-computer interactions, examples of these include Google voice assistant, Apple’s Siri, etc.. Computer vision also uses various AI based algorithms that it uses to compare images and carry out comparative analysis. The AI algorithm is able to reconfigure the software code to adapt to changes and recognize patterns more effectively.

AI systems base decisions on previous records of data. Algorithms are able to ascertain more precisely the estimation to the solution of a problem that can have a varied output, an example of this can be weather forecasting where AI can provide a closer estimate compared to human estimation. AI has the ability to streamline and speed up processes which require repetitive decision making, this will provide an increase in efficiency to the process.

However, there is a major downside, this automation and increase in efficiency has made the need of humans redundant in that ecosystem, leading to a loss of jobs. Furthermore, AI is adept at doing particular tasks repetitively, however and AI system does not posses the ability to generate creative ideas or solutions. Despite being expensive to develop it a field that has vast potential to grow its skillset.
