The author wrote this novel from the third person limited point of view. This means the author chose one character's inner thoughts to reveal in the third person narration. The only way we know how other characters are feeling and what they're thinking is in the dialogue.

In order to understand the theme, we have to look at how Hannah changed over the course of the novel. At first, Hannah was a typical teenager -- reluctant, obstinate and unappreciative of her family's history. She was trying to get out of Passover to go celebrate Easter with her best friend's family.

However, after Hannah journeys to the past and endures the suffering of the concentration camp, witnessing the horrors firsthand, she truly changes. When she returns to her own time, she realizes the pain and suffering is all too real.

The theme of the novel is to appreciate your family's history, to listen and remember, so the terrible events of the past cannot be repeated.

Hannah was sent back in time to learn a lesson. Because she couldn't be appreciative of her family's history, she needed to learn firsthand, so her compassion could grow. One could argue Hannah was her own enemy.

In this novel, the traditions of the Jewish culture are very new to us. We don't have many Jewish classmates, so we don't really know and understand. We learn about the Seder and other traditions like hiding the "afikomen."
