1949-China becomes communist

The Chinese Civil War was won by the communists in 1949 and it was ruled by Mao Zedong who killed many people by starvation as a result of his cruel policies.

Red Scare 1940s -1950s

Joseph McCarthy falsely accused people of being communist which led to great fear in the nation throughout the red scare.

Korean War 1950-1953

North Korea became communist and marched into South Korea in hopes to take control. America was afraid of the Domino theory and sent troops into South Korea to help. They almost won but China and the Soviet Union got in the way and ultimately the war ended in a stalemate with no winner.

Space Race(1950s-1960s)

America and the Soviet Union competed for power in space during the space race. The Soviet Union was winning at first but then miraculously America managed to catch up and was the first to land people on the moon in 1969.

Nuclear terror (1940s-1980s)

After the Soviets built their bomb and tested it successfully the Americans became worried that they would launch a bomb at them, so many families built bomb shelters in case the worst was to come. This fear lasted the entire Cold War.

1949 NATO established

GI Bill (1944)

The GI Bill was passed in 1944 and it encouraged veterans to get an education that would be payed for by the government and to start a family. This resulted in a crazy amount of babies being born. This generation is referred to as baby boomers.
