My key takeaways from the video are: that pity is feeling sorry for someone from a distance, sympathy is showing concern while still keeping some emotional distance, and empathy is truly understanding and sharing someone else’s feelings. Empathy requires perspective-taking and helps build deeper connections, while sympathy and pity do not create the same level of understanding.

Example: “I’m sorry you’re feeling sad; I hope things get better.”

Empathy: Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and understanding or sharing their feelings.

Empathy, pity, and sympathy are three ways people respond to someone else’s feelings, but they are different. Empathy is when you truly understand and share another person’s emotions, putting yourself in their shoes. Sympathy is when you feel concern or care for someone who is suffering, but you do not experience their emotions yourself. Pity is feeling sorry for someone, often from a distance, without connecting emotionally, and sometimes it can make the other person feel looked down upon. While empathy builds connection and understanding, sympathy and pity show care in different ways but may not create the same emotional bond.

One important learning from the video is the clear difference between pity, sympathy, and empathy. Pity often means feeling sorry for someone from a distance, without truly understanding their experience. Sympathy involves acknowledging that someone is going through a difficult situation and expressing concern for them.

However, empathy goes a step further. It involves trying to understand another person’s feelings and perspective and responding with care and support. Empathy helps build stronger and more meaningful connections because it allows us to listen, validate emotions, and make others feel understood. As educators, practising empathy with students helps create a safe, supportive, and trusting classroom environment.

I understand Pity as a distant reaction to suffering, feeling sorrow, Sympathy means acknowledging someone's pain and wishing them well, and Empathy means the ability to "walk in someone’s shoes" and share their emotional state, often due to similar experiences. It involves a deeper connection, understanding, and validating their emotions.

My key learning from the video is that many times we believe we are showing empathy, but in reality we may be expressing pity or sympathy instead. Pity creates distance by looking at someone as helpless, while sympathy acknowledges their problem but often focuses on offering comfort or solutions quickly. Empathy, however, involves truly understanding and connecting with the person’s feelings by listening without judgment and being emotionally present with them. The video helped me realize the importance of responding with genuine understanding rather than assumptions or immediate advice.

Showing generosity is good human value, but sharing another feeling is always. When we keep ourself in someone other shoes only then we can realize why one is behaving in certain. Empathy also allows us not make any judgment about anybody on the basis only visible behaviour, until you know how he/she is going through.
