Towards the peak of the pandemic in the United States, Florida was one of the national and global hotspots for positive COVID-19 cases. One of the major issues that society and the media quickly realized is that the lower class areas and neighborhoods with more prevalent ethnic minorities had les or lower quality access to COVID tests and treatment. When the statistics were released on the news, sometimes daily, the more affluent areas always had a lower positivity rate than the ones with more black and hispanic residents. The people of color were shown to be at the bottom of the priority list when it came to circulating supplies and tests. There were BLM rallies and protests that fought against the systemic racism within the police force especially, but this was not due to the pandemic. The George Floyd incident sparked the protests and other people's killings, like Breonna Taylor, added on to the fight for the BLM cause. I think that racism is obviously one of the worst things about our society and it has no rightful place in this world. I am glad that people have brought to many other people's attention and that fighting for change has become more prevalent, because racism, especially exemplified throughout this past year has made way too many appearances in our society.

The fight for change and racial equality erupted this past year. Sparking to worldwide protests and demonstrations, George Floyd’s death was a major turning point in America’s history. Killed by a white male police officer, George Floyd was racially profiled and murdered despite him clinging to life in his moments. This experience of police brutality sparked protests and riots all throughout the country, with people fighting for the Black Lives Matter cause and fighting to put an end to the systemic racism that has plagued our society.

With nothing to do but watch Netflix or clean my house all day, most of the time I chose to watch Netflix. I love the challenge of starting a new show and binge watching until the end. For some reason, it gives me a feeling of accomplishment when I finish a long series with multiple seasons. Some of the shows that I got hooked on while I was stuck at home were La Casa De Papel (Money Heist), Dead to Me, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Outer Banks. These shows are what helped me keep my sanity throughout the period of time when the country was in full lockdown. Tv shows are always something that I can just come back to and relate with at the end of the day. In fact, the worst thing about getting addicted tot here shows, is that now I have to wait for the new seasons to be released.

If there had to be one thing that the pandemic has made me realize, it is that life is short and the whole world can change in the blink of an eye . During this pandemic, I have also learned that is important to keep the people you love close to you and make sure to tell the people you love, that you love them. What I mean by this is that, tomorrow is never guaranteed, so live life while you still can and make the people you love get to hear you say it to them. This has been a year full of loss for every individual and for the year as whole. Whether it was an actual person or another aspect of life, everyone has gone through a change or loss in their lives during the pandemic. This has made personally realize that the little things are what count in life and we need to live the one life that we are given to the fullest. Tomorrow is not a promise, it is a privilege and it is good to tell people you love them every once in a while, because tomorrow is not ever promised for them either.

The first emotion that I felt towards COVID-19 was excitement. I was so happy to have an extended spring break, but little did I know that the entire world's lives would change forever. I knew a lot of people who were super scared and paranoid about the virus, which did lead me to think that they were over-reacting. However, that opinion changed pretty quickly as I watched the news and saw the numbers soar higher and higher everyday. My philosophy about COID had been that it certainly is a very serious virus and struggle that our world is going through, but I can not let it keep me from living my life. Yes there are precautions and necessary measure that need to be taken in order to prevent myself from contracting the virus, however there are still ways to enjoy life and have fun safely. My. first reaction was very quickly overtaken by other emotions, because little did I know we would not be coming back from our prolonged "spring break." I had some family members who refused to leave their houses or I knew some people who would not even go out to. get the mail, which I do think is a little bit of an exaggeration. Everyone coped with the pandemic in a different way and I think that my family and I still went out and had a good time while being covid cautious, which I think was a good way to survive the pandemic. I say all this as if the pandemic has ended, however it has not. Therefore I could look back at this in ten or twenty years and be completely mistaken, but for now, I am gonna live the life I have got, get the vaccine as soon as possible, and push my way through these unique experiences.

Interviewee: Angel Canalejo (my dad)

Q: What were your first reactions to hearing about COVID19 when it first became a pandemic last year?

A: At first I did not think it would turn out to be a global issue, but I soon become very fearful and nervous, mostly for my family. I also had to adapt to working from home and running a business form my home office. All my employees transferred to teleworking and it was very difficult to adapt to a new way of living on such short notice.

Q: What did the government announce/declare/implement recently regarding the pandemic?

A: Lately. the government regulation have not had any drastic changes or implementations, but I have been closely watching over the availability of the COVID vaccine for children, because I would like my children to get it as soon as possible. My oldest daughter, my wife, my mother, and I are all fully vaccinated, so we are just waiting on my two youngest kids to be eligible to get it. My kids will be the first in line to get that shot because I personally believe that that is the best way to dismantle this pandemic. In terms of business, not much has changed because I own a trucking and logistics company, which is considered essential, therefore we have been up and running throughout this entire pandemic.

Q: Did you have to cancel any major event like a vacation, a Bar Mitzvah, etc. because of the pandemic?

A; As a family, we had. to cancel a cruise vacation that we had planned and my daughters didn't get their full birthday celebrations, but we made due with what we had.

Q: What would you tell yourself a year ago vs now?

A: I would tell myself to be prepared for what is to come. I would also tell myself a year ago to enjoy. the time that. I am forced to be home with my kids, because. this time that. we've spent together in quarantine, really. brought us all. together as a family, And I know that when I go back to work full time, I am going. to miss being with my family and my kids, even though we get sick of each. other sometimes.

Q: What has the pandemic made you realize?

A: The pandemic has made me realize that our country is the strongest it has ever been and no matter the challenge that comes our way, whether it is a social or economical setback, we will always find a way to bounce back and heal our wounds.

Interviewee: Abigail Canalejo (my sister- 17 y/o)

Q: What were your first reactions to hearing about COVID19 when it first became a pandemic last year?

A: Well, at first I thought that I was just getting a longer spring break, so I was super excited to get extra time off from school. Little did I know that we would still be in a pandemic over a year later.

Q: What did the government announce/declare/implement recently regarding the pandemic?

A: The government mandates change so often that it is hard to even keep up with them, but I do know that kids twelve years old and up will be eligible to get. teh vaccine starting next week. Also, I do know that the state has not made masks mandatory they are just recommended and bars and restaurants are still open. All curfews have been lifted and nothing that I know of has been completely restricted to go to. This has not affected my life recently just because I have been going out to school and other places for a long time now so nothing's really changed for me. The only thing that I do not agree with the government on is the no mandatory masks. I think that it should be mandatory to wear a mask when outside the comfort of your home or when you are around other people not in you household. I do not understand why Florida has not mandated the usage of masks, but I think it would definitely help areas especially in central and northern Florida where very few people where masks.

Q: Did you have to cancel any major event like a vacation, a Bar Mitzvah, etc. because of the pandemic?

A: Our family did have to cancel a cruise family vacation that we were going to go on the summer time, and we also had to cancel my birthday event because both my sister and my birthday are on March 14th, which is the. day that everything really started to get shut down.

Q: Do you see any examples of racism, inequality, etc in events that have happened as a result of the pandemic?

A: I think that there have absolutely been bouts of racism that have especially come to the media's attention this year. I wouldn't say that it was because of the pandemic because racism has obviously always been a plague in our country that serves as one of the few downsides to living in the greatest country in the world. Racism has always been a thing in society that. can never seem to be. completely eradicated, and this year especially, the police forces in various areas has continuously shown their prejudices toward people of color, mostly African-Americans.

Q: How has your life changed since first going on quarantine last year?

A: I was restricted from traveling al over the country for my speech and debate competitions, which. has been one of the worst parts about the pandemic. Normally my team and I go to Yale, harvard, University of Florida, George Mason University, etc. to compete at. tournaments, but this year we have not been able to do any of that. All of our competitions have been online which has made a big. impact on my year.

Q: What has the pandemic made you realize?

A: The pandemic has made me realize not to take things for granted. I mean, going back to the traveling issue, I never realized how much fun we had on those. trips and I cannot wait until I can go to an in person tournament again. Also, something as simple as just going to school has become such. a privilege this year, because being online made me actually realize how much I missed being at school, which is a phrase I never thought I would utter.

Because I was home alone a lot during the lockdown, I would normally clean my house to past the time and I found that listening to a podcast was the perfect thing for me. It is like watching a show, except your eyes don't have to be glued to the screen, just in case you miss something. The first podcast I started is called Directionally Challenged and I started this because the two hosts of the podcast were former characters on one of the shows I watched called The Vampire Diaries. This podcast consists of interviews of various celebrities, life advice, wellness tips, and many more discussions about various life experiences. One of the pother podcast that I started is called Zane and Heath Unfiltered which is a more comical podcast that has a younger targeted audience. The two hosts, Zane Hijazi and Heath Hussar, are popular social media personalities that talk about funny opinions and things going on their lives. They also interview famous social media stars and other celebrities.
