Commas are used to separate words in a series. e.g. Carla, Ann, Mary and Sue went shopping yesterday. e.g. In the basket, there were apples, pears, grapes and plums.

Note that the comma is usually omitted when 'and' follows the second-last item in the list.

c.g. At the sports club, we play table tennis, badminton, lawn tennis and volleyball.

e.g. We bought bread, butter, cheese and sandwich spread.

When the individual items in the list are quite long, the comma is sometimes placed before 'and'. It is a matter of choice. e.g. Tobago is known for its unspoiled beaches, its warm and friendly people, and its relaxed atmosphere.

e.g. The Nariva Swamp is the key habitat for the West Indian Manatee, the Red Howler monkeys, the White-fronted Capuchin monkeys, and the Red-Bellied Macaws.

Commas are also used to separate a list of adjectives. e.g. A Kiskadee is a large, bright, yellow-chested bird. e.g. Calm, blue, warm waters lure visitors to Tobago's beaches.

(iii) Commas are used to separate main clauses from the subordinate clauses

if the subordinate clauses are reasonably long.

e.g. Although the members of the committee stopped and thought about their actions, they still made the wrong decision.

e.g. As I hurried home from school that afternoon, the wind began to blow violently.

Put in commas where they are needed in the following sentences.

1. Some place names of Amerindian origin are Piarco Mayaro Couva Erin and Nariva.

2. The vegetables used for chow mein are cabbage bean sprouts green peppers and carrots.
