Dorian Gray grows up while being corrupted by Lord Henry, and in return goes on to corrupt Hetty and Sibyl. He does not understand the damage he has created, as he grew up being corruption, so the actions do not phase him.

The strength of influences on Dorian is a reoccurring theme in The Portrait of Dorian Gray. He is depicted as a vulnerable person whose innocence is being targeted. Throughout the story, Dorian is always debated upon on whether he is an evil monster or not. This question is only valid as a result of the influences put on him by other characters.

Dorian already has an apparent childlike willfulness and an unconscious extreme egotism. Lord Henry doesn’t instill these qualities in Dorian, they were already there the whole time. (dramatic music plays)

This is mainly demonstrated through Dorian as a test subject, and his influences. Before he met Lord Henry, he was a fine young man who was no harm to society, but after the encounter, it changed. Dorian demonstrated that because of Lord Henry's influence, evil ensues.

The hidden is message of the novel is: Society is wrong. It worships the beautiful and is blind to all of it’s faults. It neglects the moral and wise. The whole novel is a commentary on the faults of society. Throughout the novel, it is Dorian who is worshipped and is the talk of the town. It is only because of his wealth and beauty that he is talked about. In an ideal society, it would be Basil who would be talked about because Basil has great artistic talent and is a moral person. Instead, the only time he is talked about is when he “disappears” (when he is murdered) and that talk won’t even last that long. No one cares that much about Basil because he is not as beautiful as Dorian. Society is superficial and the good suffer because of it.

If one were to look at the Dorian’s first and final conversation with Henry, they would see the change in tone. In the first conversation, Dorian’s song is sweet and melodious, reflecting his innocence. However at the end of the novel, the tune Dorian plays is hauntingly beautiful, remarked by Henry that he had never heard something so wonderful before. This song reflects Dorian’s regret by his actions, and though he may say he doesn’t regret much, the song says otherwise. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The flowers represent each character’s duality. For example, roses are used in the beginning to show how although beautiful they are also harmful. This is not just a representation of Dorian hurting others but also how Basil goes from a love to Dorian to indirectly or unwillingly hurting him through the creation of the portrait. “The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn” (2). The fact that roses are used is to show the beauty in Dorian while the thorns can show both how he has been mean to Basil and his future murderous corrupted self. On the other hand, the roses could represent the admiration Basil has in Dorian and the thorns would represent how that admiration corrupted and hurt Dorian both through the portrait and through vanity.

As a consequence of this his wife left him. Also, if Dorian had not wished to have all of his evil and age be transferred into the painting he would not have had to become the monster he became.
