Characterization on The Merchant of Venice

Antonio
Although the play’s title refers to him, Antonio is a rather lackluster character. He emerges in Act I, scene i as a hopeless depressive, someone who cannot name the source of his melancholy and who, throughout the course of the play, devolves into a self-pitying lump, unable to muster the energy required to defend himself against execution. Antonio never names the cause of his melancholy, but the evidence seems to point to his being in love, despite his denial of this idea in Act I, scene I. The most likely object of his affection is Bassanio, who takes full advantage of the merchant’s boundless feelings for him. Antonio has risked the entirety of his fortune on overseas trading ventures, yet he agrees to guarantee the potentially lethal loan Bassanio secures from Shylock. In the context of his unrequited and presumably unconsummated relationship with Bassanio, Antonio’s willingness to offer up a pound of his own flesh seems particularly important, signifying a union that grotesquely alludes to the rites of marriage, where two partners become “one flesh.”

Further evidence of the nature of Antonio’s feelings for Bassanio appears later in the play, when Antonio’s proclamations resonate with the hyperbole and self-satisfaction of a doomed lover’s declaration: “Pray God Bassanio come / To see me pay his debt, and then I care not” (III.iii.35–36). Antonio ends the play as happily as he can, restored to wealth even if not delivered into love. Without a mate, he is indeed the “tainted wether”—or castrated ram—of the flock, and he will likely return to his favorite pastime of moping about the streets of Venice (IV.i.113). After all, he has effectively disabled himself from pursuing his other hobby—abusing Shylock—by insisting that the Jew convert to Christianity. Although a sixteenth-century audience might have seen this demand as merciful, as Shylock is saving himself from eternal damnation by converting, we are less likely to be convinced. Not only does Antonio’s reputation as an anti-Semite precede him, but the only instance in the play when he breaks out of his doldrums is his “storm” against Shylock (I.iii.132). In this context, Antonio proves that the dominant threads of his character are melancholy and cruelty.

Shylock
Shylock is the play’s antagonist, and he is menacing enough to seriously imperil the happiness of Venice’s businessmen and young lovers alike. Shylock is also, however, a creation of circumstance; even in his single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a natural born monster. In one of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues, for example, Shylock argues that Jews are humans and calls his quest for vengeance the product of lessons taught to him by the cruelty of Venetian citizens. On the other hand, Shylock’s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs done to him by murdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light. Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure.

Portia
Quick-witted, wealthy, and beautiful, Portia embodies the virtues that are typical of Shakespeare’s heroines—it is no surprise that she emerges as the antidote to Shylock's malice. At the beginning of the play, however, we do not see Portia’s potential for initiative and resourcefulness, as she is a near prisoner, feeling herself absolutely bound to follow her father’s dying wishes. This opening appearance, however, proves to be a revealing introduction to Portia, who emerges as that rarest of combinations—a free spirit who abides rigidly by rules. Rather than ignoring the stipulations of her father’s will, she watches a stream of suitors pass her by, happy to see these particular suitors go, but sad that she has no choice in the matter. When Bassanio arrives, however, Portia proves herself to be highly resourceful, begging the man she loves to stay a while before picking a chest, and finding loopholes in the will’s provision that we never thought possible. Also, in her defeat of Shylock Portia prevails by applying a more rigid standard than Shylock himself, agreeing that his contract very much entitles him to his pound of flesh, but adding that it does not allow for any loss of blood. Anybody can break the rules, but Portia’s effectiveness comes from her ability to make the law work for her.

Portia rejects the stuffiness that rigid adherence to the law might otherwise suggest. In her courtroom appearance, she vigorously applies the law, but still flouts convention by appearing disguised as a man. After depriving Bassanio of his ring, she stops the prank before it goes to far, but still takes it far enough to berate Bassanio and Gratiano for their callousness, and she even insinuates that she has been unfaithful.

She is also 4 years younger than her brother Jem and a good friend of Dill Harris. The story began when she was only 6 years old. Along with Jem and Dill, they try to unveil the mystery behind the Radley Residence.

Jeremy Atticus Finch

Jem is the son of Atticus Finch. He leads Scout and Dill in their search for the mystery of the Radley Residence.

Calpurnia

Calpurnia is the cook of the Finch family. She stood as the mother of Jem and Scout. Even if they are not blood-related, she is still considered as a part of the family by Atticus. He likes to smoke a lot and he was entitled as “Quicksilver cigar”. He cannot live without cigarette for him smoking deprives a man of the best part of life. He also likes music. In this story, he travelled from hamburg to Davos platz in the canton of Grisons to visit his cousin Joachim Ziemssen in the sanatorium. He seems to be an observant man because he noticed every single thing while he’s on his way to sanatorium. I believe that he is a thoughtful man because he travelled very far just to see his cousin but they are not really that close for they call each other by their last names. His mother dies because of cardiac arrest while his father cannot cope up with grief so he got depressed and died 5 days later.

Giles Amadeo Tuason
Princess Kyla Sisante

Alice

- Alice is the 7year old child protagonist of Lewis Carroll’s children’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She is a very bright, young girl who is very observant about her surroundings. She is also described as innocent and imaginative. She has a sister and a pet cat named Dinah. In the book, she followed a rabbit out of boredom and curiosity that lead her to Wonderland. Her curiosity leads to something wherein she wants to discover everything that surrounds her. Though she might be curious to the things around her, she is very fond of doing and showing what she knows through her very wide array of imagination.

Cheshire Cat

- It is the cat of the Duchess popularized by Carroll for having a striped fur and a mischievous grin. It appears and disappear whenever it likes and somehow show signs of insanity.

White Rabbit

- This character is one of the first mind boggling character in the novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It is the very first character that Alice met in the story. White Rabbit wears a waistcoat and could talk just like us, humans. And when Alice saw him, it seemed that White Rabbit is catching up onto something as he is saying that he might be late as he hurries to his errand. He's always aware of his time and he could be considered as paranoid when it comes to his schedule. He always wanted to be punctual in every way and in everything.

Mad Hatter

-He is a small and rude man with a hat who is a member of the Mad Tea Party. When he met Alice, he explains why they are always having tea and stuck in time and that is because they try to sing for the Queen and she sentenced him to death for murdering time.

Queen of Hearts
-She is the primary antagonist of the story. She is the Queen of Wonderland and was married to King of Hearts wherein they rule Wonderland together. Queen of Hearts is a small queen with an enlarged head. She's a cruel, tyrannical, and a powerful queen. She only wanted to make Wonderland as if it was only hers and she wants to maintain it under her control. She controls most of the characters in the novel through slavery wherein Alice tried to stop her villainous acts. She’s also famous with her line “Off with their heads!”

King of Hearts
-He is a small, coward man and the spouse of the Queen of Hearts. The King of Hearts is merely a king whose goal is to please his Queen which most of the Kings wanted to do but at the same time, he is also the one who can make her change her mind about anything. So he supports her in every way that he can. Although the fact that the queen is very cruel, the King somehow has a kind heart though he is kind of coward.

I would describe Josef K. As a straight forward, bold and may I say an instinctive gent. Due to the events that has happened so far. For even the first time he was introduced, as an innocent, or rather, clean man. Despite that, as three officials came to the lodging house of where he lived, they've brought notification of his arrest for I don't know what reason still, yet. Those officials seem to not know the reason of K's arrest, especially K. himself does not know as to what the reason may be. The whole scenario with these officials, is where I concluded that Josef K. is how he is in this essay. K. Being the instinctive man himself, tried to keep the matters in his control. Straight forward he was, didn't even hesitate before he acts so. This is visible even until when he faced the judge in the court room, faced the woman that he seemed to fancy, rather too quickly, and even when facing other characters like that one pesky student, that one busy gal in the lodging house, even when clearing things up with the woman who owned the place.

I may also add how K. doesn't seem to take this "arrest" quite seriously despite his agitation towards this case on how it's certainly foolish and questionable, moreover a waste of time. One valid reason of his is because, it's certainly quite questioning for one to be invaded of his privacy, namely these officials having to barge in his place, especially due to even the officials themselves seem to not know as to why they've notified K. Of his arrest. Second, is how they made him attend court sessions, even then having to not explain to him what he did, or maybe that's just because K. Doesn't seem to give the judge a chance to speak. And if one were in Josef's shoes, one would truly feel arrogant about this case, this trial, for he hasnt known what he's done and as a first of facing the court, they mistook his identity for maybe someone else who occupied a job or position that the judge asked.

He is described to be an intelligent and hardworking man, but his perseverance lead him to his downfall when he he combined the principles of old and new sciences to create a new form of a living being. Despite his vision for greatness, he remains a protective and loving companion for his family and friends. After the deaths of his loved ones, which were caused by the monster he created, he vowed to seize the fiend, even if it would cost him his life. In the end, he learned that being content with what you have is better than taking risks, because your aspirations will bring you down.

The Monster

Although the creature has always been referred to as “Frankenstein”, he was not actually given a name in the novel. He started out as a bizarre-looking man, confused as to why his creator abandoned him so suddenly. He found refuge in the hovel of a German family’s cottage in Paris, where he learned how to speak and understand the vices and virtues of human beings. He became attached to the family, and hoped to have a good relationship with them, but when he revealed himself a few years later, they screamed in terror and left the cottage. This incident filled his heart with anger, especially towards Victor, who made him hideous. Still, he longed for love and tried to compromise with his creator by begging him to create a female version of himself, so that he can finally receive mutual affection with a being of his own kind. When Victor disagreed to his proposal, he thought of inflicting endless pain to the man, and he did it by executing all of his loved ones one by one.

MAIN CHARACTERS

Jay Gatsby

Jay Gatsby is the title character and protagonist of the novel that bears his name. He is the man who ordered his life from poverty and became a very wealthy man for one desire, which is to reunite with Daisy Buchanan, the love that he had lost for five years. Gatsby is very charming, gracious, and a bit mysterious for he do not want people who come to his parties to know him much and so he does to them, but only cares if they know Daisy.

He is admirable for all his positive traits but there are some aspects where he shows another side of him that is not quite pleasant. His desire to recapture the past he had with Daisy, is the actual reason why he built a friendship with Nick Carraway. It has also blinded him from keeping away the reality from his most unrealistic dreams. He is very obsessed with the idea of getting her back, that he couldn’t even love her, herself, and made himself a reason of self-destruction and death.

Daisy Buchanan

Daisy Buchanan is a beautiful and mesmerizing socialite, she is a wife to Tom Buchanan, cousin to Nick Carraway, and a friend to Jordan Baker. She is the past lover of Gatsby and the object of his desire. Daisy captivates men with her sheer in nature and sultry voice. She is described with purity and innocence, yet she is also very mysterious.

Daisy seemed to found love in her reunion with Gatsby, as well. She is completely aware of Tom’s affairs with other woman for years, so she thinks that she might consider the fact that it could motivate her from having an affair of her own to get back at Tom.

Despite of her beauty and charm, she is merely selfish and shallow. She is a symbolic representation of elite women, she cries with the satisfaction of how Gatsby’s material wealth brings her. Another thing that calls to question to her character is how she speaks of her daughter, Pammy Buchanan, "I hope she'll be a fool," she says, "that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." It shows her perspective of how women should be in this world, that beauty is more beneficial rather than having brains to survive.

Nick Carraway
He is the narrator and the story is being told in his point of view. He has a little effect on the story or a bit passive. According to this line “When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction—Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn.” He has a good relationship with Gatsby which may be the reason why he helped Gatsby to have a connection again with his cousin Daisy. There are no things mentioned about how Nick looks like.

Tom Buchanan
He is the husband of Daisy, he has an ongoing affair with Myrtle, the wife of Wilson. Tom is the antagonist of the story, as he took the love of Gatsby’s life, Daisy. They both seem not head-over-heels for each other but they do not show any intention of leaving. He is an abusive partner with Myrtle as he broke her nose the night when he brought Nick to New York to introduce him to Myrtle.
“ Well, it's a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff; it's been proved." According to these lines, he is a racist and he believes that the white race is the most powerful race.
“He had changed since his New Haven years. Now he was a sturdy, straw haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body—he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing and you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It was a body capable of enormous leverage—a cruel body.” This lines tell us about Tom's looks, as told earlier in the story he was one of the best to play football in the New Haven, but as time passed by, his body became weaker and now his age is slowly affecting the way he looks. His eyes tend to make him aggressive and manipulative.

by
GEROME CANGCO &
EDWARD AQUINO

Vincent Gaela
Dannah Allauigan

Gregor Samsa

Is the protagonist of Franz Kafka’s short story, The Metamorphosis, who is just a normal traveling salesman that suddenly finds himself turned into a bug or "a monstrous vermin" according to the book-- Expertly hidden behind a monotonous narrative, his character was always thought of as complicated, indifferent, and naive. But overall, Gregor is simply a child and a brother who cares for his family more than anything. In the first few chapters it is seen that this hard-working young man has only one purpose, it is to provide for his family. Basing on that fact, his family’s dependence on him is the reason for why it seemed hopeless and why everything in their household rapidly fell apart. With no way of communicating, he had become an unwelcome guest.

Grete Samsa
Starting out with naivety and finishing as an independent young woman, there is no denying that Grete Samsa changed the most in the narrative.
Directly stated in context, Grete is an observant and intelligent young girl. Her traits are seen in the first few paragraphs of the second chapter where she gave Gregor an assortment of food to taste after disliking his favorite drink, milk. As the youngest, she has taken it upon herself to take care of Gregor by giving him food and cleaning his room. Overtime, her perspective in helping Gregor had changed from being helpful to a tedious chore because after the incident of her mother walking in on him while they were taking the furniture out of his room she had shown deep resentment towards her brother. Going along the plot, she had taken a job as a salesgirl in the day to support her family in her brother’s place and to her second job—taking care of Gregor. Grete, while maturing, started despising Gregor and thought of him as a pest. She even suggested that they get rid of him so when her brother had died, she felt nothing. For the death of an insect, is not to grief for.

Mr. Bingley who fell in love with Ms. Bennet was good looking and gentlemanlike. He had a pleasant countenance, and unaffected manners. He is very modest and is easily influenced by others especially by his friend Mr. Darcy.

Mr. Darcy is a tall, handsome, wealthy, proud man who has a very mysterious personality. When he was forced by Mr. Bingley to dance with Elizabeth he told him that she is not beautiful enough to attract him, which Elizabeth heard. In the first ten chapters Mr. Darcy seems to show excessive pride and self-satisfaction. At first, Mr. Darcy doesn’t like Elizabeth, but as the time passed he is having an interest in her and he wants to know more of her.

Ms. Bennet (Jane Bennet) is the eldest of the Bennet daughters. She is a gentle and kind-hearted young woman, and is Elizabeth’s confidant. She tends to be their mother’s favorite because she is in the words of Mr. Bingley. But on the other side, her father seems to find her as too generous and is easily taken advantage of. In the story it is obvious that Ms. Bennet is hopelessly in love with Mr. Bingley.

Elizabeth Bennet is Jane’s sister who is also considered as her bestfriend. She is an intelligent and spirited young woman, and her father’s favorite and is described by him by having ‘quickness of mind’ than her sisters. At another party Sir Lucas offered Mr. Darcy to dance with Elizabeth but she declined it. As Mr. Darcy is starting to have interest in her, little did she know that Ms. Bingley (Mr. Bingley’s sister) is jealous of her because she likes Mr. Darcy, and she is starting to notice that Mr. Darcy’s attention is going towards Elizabeth.

Characterization of The Stranger by Albert Camus:
Elisha Lei C. Milagrosa
Trif Doloriel

Meursault

-He is the protagonist in the story. He is a office working guy with a descent job and has a simple living. In the book Meursault is different from the people surrounding him, there’s no extraordinary about his looks, yet his lack of emotions or attachment towards other are hardly to understand because it was so indifferent from others. On the day he received the telegram that indicates his mother’s death, he doesn’t even shed a tear or show emotional affection towards the situation for he doesn’t feel that it’s real, that’s reality, “...it’s almost as if Mother weren’t really dead. The funeral will bring it home to me, put an official seal on it...”. He has a affair with a girl named Marie Cardona, Meursault was attracted to her, yet he wasn’t sure if he was inlove with her or what is his real feeling towards her. Despite of him being indifference about their relationship, Marie still loves him. “... she murmured something about my being “a queer fellow.” “And I daresay that’s why I love you”...”. Meursault also killed a arab man, without reason.

Raymond Sintes

-He is a short tempered guy who is also violent specially to his mistress. He is a friend/neighbor of Meursault. By The help of Meursault, his plans to get his arab mistress punished was fulfilled. He planned it out for he thinks she was unfaithful to her. Yet he doesn’t know that the brothers or “arab mans” are about to get revenge too by the time they were on the beach.

Salamano

-He is one of the neighbor of Meursault, He is an old man with a dog as his companion. He is a little snobbish for when Meursault tries to have a conversation he merely answers. His attention was on his dog only. At first it doesn’t appear that he love his dog and he cared for him because he always shout things to his dog “Then he beats his dog and calls it names.”, but later on as his dog went missing he realized how much that dog means to him. “One of his mates on the railway whose bitch had just had pups had offered him one, and he had taken it, as a companion. He’d had to feed it from the bottle at first. But, as a dog’s life is shorter than a man’s, they’d grown old together...” ““Now and then we had some proper set-tos, he and I. But he was a good mutt all the same.”

Masson

-He was Raymond’s friend who invited him to go in his beach house. Raymond, together with Meursault and Marie, went to beach house to have fun and enjoys the Sunday with “heavenly weather” as per marie and stunning beach view, yet the tragic part of the story starts when the Meursault kills an arab man in that beach.

Thomas Perez

-He is known as “fiancé” of the mother of Meursault inside the Home. He is an atheist, who firmly believes that human existence holds no greater meaning and how we lived our life doesn’t matter at all. He is considered a “stranger” in the society because of his indifference from others. Like for example, The events that are significant for most people like marriage and death isn’t important to him at all primarily because of his lack of emotions. Mersault is also an honest man and doesn’t even try to hide his lack of feeling. His actions and thoughts doesn’t vary each other, it just shows what kind of person he is.

Marie Cardona
Marie used to be Mersault's co office worker and now turned to be his lover. At first, Mersault wasn't sure about her love for Marie and she was dissapointed at him. But still Marie didn't think twice about marrying him. Marie was loyal to Mersault up to the end of the novel where He was arrested and put in a trial.

Raymond Sintes
Raymond is a short tempered man who is just living right next to Mersault. He is known for violating his wife because he suspects that she was cheating on him. He is a complete opposite to Mersault but they are friends. He then goes on a journey, which was shipwrecked, and was enslaved by a Moor. He escapes the place with Xury and Moely. Only Moely is the one who separated himself to them. Xury wants to be with Robinson.

His personality in the story is rather dull but there are some that portrays it. He is being generous as he give gifts to other people. He is not even interested to portray himself as the hero of the story and he never boast about his courage rather he portrays himself as an ordinary sensible man. He expresses more love to Friday than his own family.

Xury – Xury is a slave Robinson met before they escape from the Moor.
