As a child, Mariam is called "Harmai"and characterizes herself as this word, " An illegitimate person who would never have a legitimate claim to the other things people had, things such as love, family, hope, acceptance" (Pg. 4). This symbolizes how Mariam sees herself. But buy the end of the novel, Mariam says "she thought her entry into this world, child of a lonely villager, and unintended thing, a pitiable, regrettable incident. A weed. And yet she was leaving the world as a woman who had loved and been loved . She was leaving it as a friend, a companion, a guardian. A mother. No person of consequence at last" (Pg. 370). This word, alone, ignited her to become the opposite of it. To prove her childhood self wrong, an attain happiness.

Nana tells us how she was treated by Jalil, stating "You know what he told his wives by a way of defense? That i forced myself on him. That it was my fault. Didi? You see? This is what it means to be a women in the world" (Pg. 7). Later, when she is a wife to Rasheed, she remembers this moment and says "She would have to clean after his mess, Rasheed, cook for him, wash his clothes. And there would be other chores as well- Nana had told her what husbands did to their wives" (Pg. 49). Later Rasheed disrespect Mariam, telling her that a women crying is something she cannot stand (Pg.59). It is shown everywhere in this novel that the men in Afganasitan are dominant.

This continues, when Nana commits suicide, Mariam feels it is her fault because she had once told Mariam that if she ever left, she would not live (Pg 43). Mariam carries this guilt into her older ages when she has a miscarriage, "Believe[ing} that the baby had been an undeserved blessing, that she was being punished for what she had done to Nana" (Pg.93). Mariam is constantly feeling guiltily.

Mariam goes home, and feels curious of Rasheed's belongings, and she finds magazines of naked women, she began to ask herself "...why did Rasheed insist that she cover when he thought nothing of looking at the private area of other men's wives and sisters?" In Afghanistan at that time, it is customary that women get married at a very young a age. Therefore, it was appropriate for Jalil to see rationality in giving Mariam to Rasheed.

The women outside of her neighborhood were always fully clothed, but not the ones on this one.
