When the ponds dried up due to droughts in Yellowstone, the amphibians lost their habitat. Because of this, they could not thrive in their ecosystem and expand their population by creating offspring. The amphibians showed a biotic response to warming because their natural habitat contained the necessary abiotic factors in order for the amphibians to contribute to the ecosystem. When this dramatically changed due to climate change, the amphibians could not sustain their niches. Most amphibians, such as the golden toad, prefer wet and cool habitats, so when El Niño takes its toll on their moist habitats, the organisms either die or are forced to find another place to live. Since the drastic change in temperature caused a disease that specifically affected amphibians to spread, the amphibians could not defend themselves and died. This biotic limiting factor is one of the main affects of climate change that heavily impacted amphibians in all of the infected habitats.
