Douglass uses the memory of Aunt Hester being whipped to explain how slavery works.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In chapter 3, Douglass explains that when a slave is asked they always say that they are content with their lives and their masters, so that they don´t get punished. This is common to everyone either slave or free. Slaves will sometime argue over whose master is kinder, even if the master is not kind.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Chapter 3, Douglass continues detailing Colonel Lloyd’s home plantation where he grew up. Lloyd has a large cultivated garden that people from all over Maryland come to see. Some slaves can not resist eating fruit out of it. To prevent them, Lloyd puts tar on the fence surrounding the garden and whips any slave found with tar on him.</div>]]></description>

He is cruel in his punishments and he wants all the slaves to bow down to him. Douglass later starts to talk about the cruel and gruesome acts of violence against the slaves in order to show that slavery is inhuman. </div>]]></description>
