RTI is a special type of problem solving. It follows a set of standards and regulations for protocol. There is an initial <del>screen</del> process, tier placement, and progress monitoring standards. This type of problem solving does not require a team of people to create a solution but rather the overall improvement plan is already established. The RTI process does not require participates to establish their ability to address the problem because once a student is in the RTI process there our set procedures and outcomes.

Proactive vs Reactive

The urgency of problem solving varies. A problem can arise quickly and requires immediate response. This type of problem solving is reactive. Once the problem occurs steps are taken to solve the problem. Proactive problem solving occurs before the crisis or problem occurs. This type of problem solving is in the efforts to avoid future situations that could arise. Educators use reactive problem solving more frequently. Today schools have created a space for collaboration to happen. This is a good time to develop proactive techniques to solve problems.

Diversity

Diversity can effect problem solving. Among the team a bias might occur when the student who is the focus is from a different background. Teams can group certain student groups together and over generalize. It is important to focus on the individual students needs. Another way diversity can play a role in problem solving is the way the participates react to the problem based on their background, beliefs, and experiences.

Group Problem Solving

Once a problem is identified a group is formed to analyze the problems and determined the likelihood for success. Then the team must identify the problem. This includes sharing data, stating the problem, and make sure all participates agree with the identified problem. Once the problem is identified the team must generate solutions. This includes generating many possible solutions for the problem. Next the team needs to evaluate potential solutions. Eliminate solutions that are too hard to implement, ideas that are not evidence based. Once the solutions are fewer then the team needs to state the advantages and disadvantages of each possible solution. Once a solution is selected based on its effectiveness the solution needs to be implemented. After monitoring the solution for some time the team needs to evaluate the outcomes. Data can be used to determine if the solution was successful.

Problem solving is a crucial process that needs to be developed in schools. It can be hard to come together and discuss and agree on solutions for students success. The importance of collaboration is on the rise. It is important to establish roles in the problem solving process so each team member is a contributing member of the group.
