This strategy would be very helpful to use when students are trying to learn APA 7 format. My ENGL 101 students often tell me that formatting stresses them out and that they never had to do it before they got to college. Their stress works against them and prevents them being able to focus on the academic task at hand. Bubble breathing might help decrease the stress experienced by these students and allow them to focus.

Source: https://www.elsanetwork.org

I often have students in my ENGL 101 classes that have had many negative experiences with writing during their K-12 years. When they get to college, many of them feel extremely anxious and stressed out when faced with an essay assignment. These feelings impair their ability to focus on their writing. Box breathing might help alleviate their anxiety and stress and enable them to focus more effectively on their writing.

Source: https://swaafrica.org/breathing-techniques-for-stress-and-anxiety/

Many of the students in my ENGL 101 classes tell me that during high school, they didn't have to incorporate quoted or paraphrased sentences from readings into their essays. When they get to college, they have a hard time getting accustomed to doing this. In fact, it stresses them out. Occasional brain breaks, combined with paired and/or small group close reading activities, might help them regulate their emotions.

Source: https://numberdyslexia.com/brain-break-activities-and-games-ideas-for-college-older-students/

Many of the students in my CMNS 101/ENGL 101 Learning Community classes have a fear of public speaking; they become paralyzed with fear and do not know how to proceed. Taking five minutes at the beginning of class (on a speech day) might help them regulate their emotions and enable them to focus on the academic task.

Source: https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/college-mindfulness-workbook
